We had the good fortune of connecting with lisa saul and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi lisa, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I was working as a hairdresser and a salon in 1989 and I was newly pregnant I’m concerned about how the chemicals in the salon were affecting my baby. I had been teaching haircolor for an Italian haircolor company and traveling around the United States showing stylists how to use the hair color. I was also very successful colorist in the salon I was working at. I started to get rashes on my hands and my wrists and I knew it was from the chemicals in the salon. I was concerned my baby may be affected by the chemical exposure.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My businesses are about non-toxic. EcoColors a holistic hair salon was created as a non-toxic salon, a relaxing environment, a place where people can come relax, let go and leave feeling 100% empowered and looking great! ( and knowing everything we use was carefully picked so the stylists and clients aren’t exposed to toxic chemicals)- it doesn’t mean everything is totally hypoallergenic though- some people still have allergies to various ingredients though it’s rare . My degree was from the Medical College of Georgia as a medical technologist. I worked at Piedmont Hospital during the day and I went to hair school in the evenings. In the hospital I had experience in various aspects of medical technology. I’ve worked in open-heart surgery testing blood gases, I worked in a laboratory testing for drugs in the body, I worked in an immunology lab, and I did various tests on body chemistry .

After I graduated from hair school, I worked in several salons. When I opened my salon in 1990, Sterling was eight months old.( he’s thirty now!) I used to take him to work in a backpack and in between clients I would breast-feed him. Ivy was also raised in the salon. My clients will probably remember Ivy walking around with a clipboard making up surveys to ask the clients and a fortune -telling bowl where clients would pick a fortune. Examples of the fortunes were: “ you will travel soon” or “ you will pee today “ 🤣

It wasn’t always easy though, it took me years to learn all the tax requirements, bookkeeping, and all the necessary responsibilities of running a business, I recommend if you’re thinking about starting a business to take some classes from the small business administration.

I’ve maintain friendships throughout the years with hairdressers that I worked with in various salons. I’m happy to announce that two hairdressers I worked with when I was pregnant with Sterling, are coming to work at EcoColors in May 2021. EcoColors Salon welcomes Mae and Melissa, expert stylists and also good friends.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Well of course we would start out having our hair taken care of at EcoColors A Holistic Hair Salon. We would eat breakfast at Ria’s Bluebird, take a hike at Stone Mountain or go paddle boarding at Morgan falls. For lunch we would go to the General Muir. Then acupuncture at The Chinese Medical Center on Buford hwy with Dr Li or Dr Chi and after that a mellow visit to the High Museum. For dinner we would go to the White Bull in Decatur.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to dedicate this article to my children Sterling and Ivy . They taught me so much. They say when you have children they bring blessings with them. Sterling brought the intention of setting up EcoColors -A Holistic Salon and Ivy brought the intention of creating a nontoxic haircolor called EcoColors. Besides inspiring my businesses, they taught me about devotion, unconditional love, patience, laughter, balance ,patience, and presence. It’s been an honor to be their Mom and I love and adore and respect them . I’m grateful to them for all they’ve taught me .
