We had the good fortune of connecting with Lisa Poore and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lisa, how do you think about risk?
To be an entrepreneur, I believe you have to embrace risk. Starting your own business inevitably involves uncertainties and risks — will it succeed? Do I have enough money for startup costs and for payroll? Are the employees I chose the right fit? Is my business plan solid and going to lead to success? When I started my business, I faced countless unknowns. There were so many unknowns in starting my business. I had to learn to navigate the discomfort of uncertainty and manage the often tight financial margins that came with building a business from the ground up.

Even though it has been many years since the start of my business, the uncertainties haven’t disappeared. Whether it was navigating a pandemic or figuring out how to manage increasing costs due to inflation, new challenges continue to arise. What has helped me face these challenges is trust in myself and faith in God. Taking steps of faith not only gave me the courage to start my business but has also allowed me to sustain and grow it successfully over time.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am the owner and director of a counseling practice called Paraclete Counseling Center. What makes our practice unique is the meaning behind its name. “Paraclete” comes from the Greek word for the Holy Spirit and translates to “one who comes alongside.” This embodies our mission: our therapists are committed to walking alongside clients in their pain so they don’t feel alone. We strive to provide clinical excellence integrated with faith as a part of the therapy process. Above all, we create a safe space where people feel seen, heard, and supported throughout their journey. If people want to know more about our practice, I invite them to visit us at paracletecounseling.com.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend were visiting, we’d spend most of our time simply hanging out and talking. As fellow therapists, deep conversations are a natural part of our time together. I’d take her to Avalon, where we could stroll, shop, and enjoy meals at some of the charming restaurants. We’d also head to the Battery to grab a bite and catch a Braves game. Since we both love stand-up paddleboarding, we’d definitely spend a day at Lake Lanier, taking our boards out for some time on the water. Talking, eating, and enjoying the outdoors would make for the perfect visit!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My shoutout goes to the strong women in my family and to my mom as well the incredible therapists I’ve had the privilege of working with over the years. I come from a family of very strong women. My grandmother went to nursing school when she was in her 40’s, and this was back in the 1960’s when women who were stay-at-home moms didn’t go to college for the first time in mid-life. My mother, a single mom, always told me I could achieve anything I set my mind to. Her unwavering belief in me gave me the confidence to believe in myself. Being a therapist is deeply rewarding but also incredibly challenging—walking alongside people through the darkest moments of their lives takes a toll. Having a supportive community of fellow therapists who truly understand the unique demands of this work has been invaluable to me. And finally, I owe my success to God — without whom I would not have the strength, stamina and faith to walk this journey of helping people.
