We had the good fortune of connecting with Lisa Harris and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lisa, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I am from Moore County, North Carolina, home of the PGA Tour; a place where millions of tourists visit every year for the plentiful golf courses and great shopping. The funny thing is that I never learned to golf. My mother was self-employed most of her adult life, cleaning hotels, villas and homes of very affluent people. She would often take my baby sister and I with her during summer months to help clean. We would polish silver and dust little knick-knacks, doing menial tasks to keep us busy and out of trouble. Little did I know this was instilling in me skills that even today greatly impact my life.
I have almost always had a business on the side. Even during my time as a stay-at-home mom, I opened a daycare center in the basement of our home. As one can imagine, keeping my home clean and organized comes easy to me. These skills are very important when it comes to running a skincare business from a home studio. Good manufacturing practices and organization are must have skills to prevent accidents and keep product safe for consumer use.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
In 2018 I owned a subscription box company. I was procuring organic bath and body products for busy moms who simply did not have the time for home spa days. I took a soapmaking class and had an ah-ha moment where I realized I could make my own bath and body products. Initially I started with only making natural soap, and I now offer skin care items such as body butters and scrubs, face washes, shower gels and more.
It was not easy growing through the Covid pandemic. Yet, with a lot of hard work and dedication I worked craft shows and artist markets in open-air situations and was able to keep my company profitable and growing. I reinvested everything I made back into the company. I was able to do that because I continued to work my full-time corporate job.
I believe in the products I create. I know how they have impacted my overall health; body, mind and spirit. I control every ingredient that goes into my products, and my family and I personally use every product in the MAGALINE line.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Being in a suburb NW of downtown Atlanta has it’s perks. For brunch we would definitely have to visit the Atlanta Breakfast Club. It’s a modern diner where one can get a good down-home breakfast meal. The patrons are of every ethnicity, age and background. The service is excellent.
Another venture would take us to Twisted Soul for some classic soul food.
We would visit the Atlanta Botanical Gardens, take in a show at the fabulous Fox Theater, and take in some sports at the Mercedes Benz Stadium and State Farm Arena.
As my best friend she would know the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre was on the list for opera or ballet.
Finally, we would have drinks in my backyard on the pergola with friends.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My mother was such a great influence on my upbringing that when it came to naming my soap and skin care business it was an easy choice to name my busy after her.
Her name being Mary Magaline, I initially took MA from Mary and Ma from Magaline and MaMa Soap Company was born. However, the name was so close to another company’s name that I eventually rebranded to Magaline Soaps.
