We had the good fortune of connecting with Lisa Fields and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lisa, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
The thought of having my own business has been something that I believe I was born with. It seems so natural for me to think of ways to earn a money without answering to anyone. Miss Ebony’s Beauty Essentials, a venture both myself and my husband recently embarked on, was a collaborative choice. We thought, why not give our people a beauty supply store like no other. A place where they can come in, receive a consultation regarding their hair, and not be watched as if they came in to steal. We wanted to offer a place where our people can come and feel welcomed while being treated with the highest quality of customer service.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Professionally, I am a Deputy Warden of Administration for the Department of Corrections. An honor that has truly prepared me to handle my own business more efficiently. I am proud to say that my career with the department and my many positions has me feeling like I can tackle whatever life sends my way. In addition to this achievement, I hold a Bachelors of Science in Criminal Justice from Bauder College and a Masters of Art in Counseling Studies from Capella University. I must say, I am well prepared for whatever may come my way. Recently, I’ve realized that being the owner of a brick and mortar has been much more gratifying. Being directly linked to my community, building relationships, and by offering people an experience that so many of us crave; it doesn’t get any better than that. We thought it was time to shake things up and go for it. I must add how the thought of leaving my career has been terrifying, but I will not know how much my brain function can expand until I actually leave and have only my business to focus on. I know that the opportunities will be endless once I am allowed to fully commit to our brand.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Atlanta is such a great city with so many places to visit. I would have to start out by visiting my favorite area which is Little Five Points. This is an area where people can just be themselves while patronizing some of the most intriguing shops in Atlanta. We can grab a bite to eat at one of the eateries, they don’t disappoint. From there, if it’s spring or summer; we can visit the lovely Piedmont Park. I absolutely love the atmosphere there. The people, the bikes, the picnics, it’s all fun at the park. Lastly, the food choices for are endless. We love Sage Woodfire Grill, Harold’s Chicken, Nana’s Chicken & Waffles and for great soul food, there’s Reminiscent Soul Food Restaurant. The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to acknowledge my other half. Without his love, support, and eagerness to see his wife happy; this business would not have gotten started.
