We had the good fortune of connecting with Lindsay Rayna and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lindsay, can you share a quote or affirmation with us?
My favorite quote comes from Victor Hugo, a French poet, novelist, and dramatist of the Romantic movement. He said, “There’s no force on earth that can stop an idea whose time has come.” This is one of those quotes that almost seemed to unlock a new door in my brain. I’ve embraced the fact that my time has finally come!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
The year was 2011 and it was my Sophomore year of college. I decided that the on-campus dorms no longer served me and I wanted to venture off to my own apartment. The problem? I was broke. I had to think quickly because the 1st of the month was quickly approaching and $400 was a lot of money for an 18-year-old to come up with. And so, Lindsay Rayna’s beauty parlor was birthed. I put all my Youtube University skills to work. I offered nail services, makeup, and hair. The “business” was booming and a new passion was ignited. By the end of my second semester, I made the decision to drop out of college to pursue my beauty career at Paul Mitchell Cosmetology School. Today, 10 years from inception, my career in the beauty industry has taken many twists and turns. I learned many lessons along the way and have been blessed with the most wonderful, consistent clients. I finally decided to bet on myself in April of 2020 to take my business to the next level with the curation of Rayna Beauty Co LLC. This is an affordable-luxury beauty brand that caters mostly to women of color. We carry all of your makeup and hair needs with plans to expand further in 2021.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I have one word: BRUNCH! I’d take my girls to a nice brunch spot like Ms. ICEY’S Kitchen & Bar located in Decatur. Everybody loves endless Mimosas! We always need to have an excuse to dress up and take pictures of our outfits and our food. Next, we’d head to the S.C.A.D Museum of Fashion to experience the iconic wardrobe designs of THE Ruth Carter. Our mission on any day is “get the perfect photo that is post-worthy” and S.C.A.D. ‘s grass-lined rooftop would be the perfect place to get the perfect shot. By this time, I’m sure our stomachs would be a-rumble again. We’d head to one of my favorite spots, Bartaco. This place has the best food, drinks, and ambiance to round off our evening. There are so many different ways to experience where you live with those you love. Look for new activities like candle-making, paint-n-sips, murder mystery dinners, comedy shows, screen on the green, anything beyond the mundane and predictable. Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
What is a Legacy? It is a life lived with dignity, grace, and integrity. It is a life lived decently and in order peaceful, calm, and sparkling as still water. What is a Legacy? It is a soft-spoken word in a time of need. It is a warm hug after an inspirational sermon has been preached. What is a Legacy? It is a listening ear and a compassionate heart. It’s a graced wisdom that sets your memory apart. -Kevin Joseph Oliveira (My father 1963-2019)
