We had the good fortune of connecting with Linda Medd and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Linda, why did you pursue a creative career?
I have always been drawn to the unique or unusual, so making things comes naturally for me. Initially I chose a more traditional career path. Although I was involved in creative projects, it wasn’t hands on. I love what I do now because it gives me the freedom to express myself in a more personal way. This quote from Robert Breeson sums up what drives me as an artist. “Make visible what, without you, might perhaps never have been seen”.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I spend quite a bit of time experimenting with different mediums, techniques and color palettes for my art. Coming up with new ideas and concepts keeps things fresh and more interesting for me.

My art is described as abstract or non-representational. It is often influenced by the shapes, textures and patterns found in nature. I paint intuitively without a pre-conceived plan which is both challenging and rewarding. As a mostly self-taught artist I am proud that I took a leap of faith and began painting. I can’t say it has always been easy but it is fun and gratifying. I hope that my work evokes a sense of curiosity and beauty in those who see it. I put my heart and soul into each piece that I create.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I tend to be a homebody so it’s really good to have a reason to get out and explore. There is so much to do in Atlanta and the outlying areas that it’s hard to choose. In town, I would go for lunch and shopping at the Ponce City Market, an evening stroll at the Atlanta botanical gardens, particularly if the Chihuly exhibit is in town, and an evening at the Fox. It’s fun to explore the Westside with all of the interesting shops including the Westside Market. When in that area I like lunch at either Upbeet or Nuevo Laredo. I live in Roswell so we would spend some time at the square. Two of my favorite stops for lunch or dinner are 1920 Tavern or Roux on Canton. Marietta is another town where I like to take guests to visit my favorite art galleries including DK Contemporary and The Loft. The First Friday art stroll is a lot of fun if the timing works out. I could go on and on as there are simply too many places to visit in a week.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Many people have supported me along the way. Early on I joined a Meet-Up group, led by Ailan Olsen, that worked through Julia Cameron’s book, The Artists Way. Besides learning a lot, I gained the confidence to believe that I could do this. My artist friends at The Treehouse Studio and Gallery have taught me a lot and we have a great time painting and laughing together. Most of all, my husband, Randy, continues to be supportive of me living my dream.
