We had the good fortune of connecting with Liliana Ramos and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Liliana, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Art has consistently played a significant role in my life in expression. Since I could remember, I would be doodling and sketching characters to friends and family. In high school, I found my passion in oil paint by the way oils capture  depth and luminosity while allowing for detail work. I found it was the perfect medium for me to depict emotions and capture a narrative. I also discovered that I would use my artistic abilities in the science and medical world. I decided to pursue medical illustration to express scientific concepts through illustrations to not only educate but to visually depict the ideas.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I have always had a fascination with human anatomy and form. My style of delicate brushstroke depicts the detail and texture while my palette of vibrant colors aids in showing the human condition within the figures. My oil panting skills of depicting visual narratives translated into creating tools to help scientists and doctors communicate scientific topics. I had to retouch and perfect my portfolio when applying to graduate school. It admittedly took longer than I expected to do well in my application process. I learned that the desire to constantly learning is key specially for this career. I am also learning to embrace the learning process. One should take an opportunity to grow. I am still learning to not compare myself with other but to focus on my strengths and style to overcome challenges.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would take them to all of the art places in Atlanta. For instance, we would visit the High museum. MOCA and Atlanta Contemporary in Midtown. We would then go to The Municipal Market in downtown where we could get good burgers, pies and sweets.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There have been many people who have helped me throughout my artistic journey. I am grateful for my family’s love and support. My parents and my brother have supported my aspirations to be an artist, specifically a medical illustrator. They believed and pushed me to pursue my master’s education. My friends have always been there for me and encouraging me to keep going. They have contributed significantly to my growth as both an artist and an individual. I am grateful for professors from my undergraduate study who mentored me in my biology and art classes especially in my application process to graduate school. I am grateful for Dr. Siegler’s and Dr. Gutzler’s help.
