We had the good fortune of connecting with Lianna Alexander and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lianna, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I never pictured myself being a business owner! My life is taking some interesting twists and turns lately, and this is definitely one of them! Returning to the classroom post quarantine and virtual learning was one of the hardest experiences of mine and my colleagues’ careers. Our students were not only behind, but traumatized and off of the school balance. However, the push from schools and districts has been business as usual – keep pushing forward. I didn’t see any plan or intention to remediate! Nor has there been a real attempt to address the socioemotional needs. So, I tried to advocate all year – and seemingly failed lol. So what do you do when you can’t change or beat the system? You start your own. That’s where Building Bridges Tutoring and Remediation Services came from.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My life’s journey has taken many twists and turns! There are many things that I am proud of, but I’m most proud of my journey in ministry. I was ordained a minister back in 2015 and have been able to accomplish so many things. Covergirls for Christ, Inc is the women’s ministry that I established in 2017. It’s purpose is to edify (build up), exhort (encourage) and intercede for women. It’s meant to show women that we have more commonalities than differences in hopes that we can be more united through Jesus Christ. Our stories are often more similar than we realize, and can help to keep each other encouraged, uplifted and empowered (through the Holy Spirit). Through Covergirls I have a podcast called Broken Places and Broken Spaces: Being Healed Through God’s Word. It’s on most of the platforms. I talk about various issues that we face and need to be healed from, and how it can only be done through God, Also, I published a book this year entitled My Exodus: Journey To Promise and Purpose. It details my experience with a divorce that ultimately put me on my path to destiny and the purpose that God had for my life. We also have done two women’s conferences and plan to do much more! I am still working to build the ministry so that I can be a vessel to impact the lives of more women across the nation, and potentially the world. It hasn’t been an easy journey, but definitely has been worth it! One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned in it is perseverance – you have to sometimes endure what life throws at you, and keep it pushing! You can’t quit or give up, even when it seems like the challenges you’re facing are overwhelming. And that’s a huge part of Covergirls’ message – despite the things we face and go through, we can help each other persevere!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m definitely person who loves to chill at home! But I also love to eat at Pappadeaux’s restaurant. It is one of my favorites, along with Benihana. When I’m looking for something sweet my family loves Donut King in Covington or Baby Cakes Bakery in Covington.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are many people that definitely deserve a shoutout along my journey! I first and foremost have to recognize God for all that He’s done in my life. He is the one who placed some extraordinary people in my life to give the love, support and encouragement that was needed. I have to shoutout my grandparents who raised me and helped make me the woman I am today. They are responsible for the course that my life was able to take at a young age. I also have to shoutout my friends – who are more like my sisters – Kashania and Naomi. They have stuck with me along my journey in ministry – through it’s ups and downs, successes and failures, hurt and pain. They’ve been there to encourage, support, push, comfort and just be there at times when I needed them the most. There have been so many times when I wanted to quit and they wouldn’t let me!
