We had the good fortune of connecting with Lia Monet and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lia, what’s one piece of conventional advice that you disagree with?
When it comes to entrepreneurship, particularly in the content marketing arena, CONSISTENCY has become a major buzzword. While showing up for your brand on a regular basis is important, many self proclaimed, 6 figure gurus insist that constantly engaging with your audience, above all else, is what makes or breaks a business. They’re using consistently and constantly interchangeably and they are not one in the same. That messaging pressures many entrepreneurs into churning out a lot of fluff for the sake of fulfilling some arbitrary content quota.
Posting for the sake of posting is not beneficial to your brand’s growth at all. In fact, quite the opposite. You train your community to skim through your blogs, videos and info graphics.
Being consistent actually means delivering the same quality of content no matter how often (or not) you post. Whether you post 3 times a day on Instagram or simply send out a quarterly newsletter to your email list, your audience knowing that what you provide is top tier every single time is way more important than trying to master an ever changing algorithm.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I consider it such an honor and privilege to be able to work with women to build their brands. Because women juggle so many responsibilities, it’s easy for us to become discouraged when trying to start or grow a business. Her Hectic Life provides both products and services that help women navigate entrepreneurship. Clients can count on me for creative and professional branding tools like logos and billboard designs as well as one-on-one strategy sessions. As a Certified Life Coach, I’m able to coach women through their business goals with strong regard to how those goals fit into an already demanding life.
It’s important to me for women in biz to understand that there is never a perfect time or a perfect way to do something, you just have to start. That’s it, that’s the hack. Even if your initial product, service or program is weak, how else do you expect to find out what improvements to make? Apple has over 13 versions of their iPhone, continuously improving on the last model. If we think of our own brands in a similar way, then we can alleviate the pressure of thinking we have to be perfect straight out the gate.
With my annual signature conference, Ladies Who Launch (each January in Hampton, VA), I’ve been able to create a space where women learn tools for entrepreneurship from industry experts, network with other goal driven women as well as apply for a scholarship and resource package for womenpreneurs.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would definitely suggest people stay at Simply Panache Place. It’s a Black owned, women-lead boutique hotel in Hampton, VA. It has always been the perfect getaway. Some of the best places to grab a bite to eat or to catch happy hour are PinkFish Seafood Bistro, 1865 Brewery, The Baker’s Wife and Mangeaux Mango (same owners as Simply Panache Place). Or if you don’t feel like going out, hire a chef for the night, my favorites are Lisa’s Plate and The Tasting Spoon (both can be found on Instagram). Before you leave you have to check out Monroe Rooftop, it’s a premium outdoor lounge and it’s SUCH a vibe!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I could never say enough about how God moves in my life, and I literally call my husband “Clutch” because he comes THROUGH when nobody else does.
But I’d definitely like to shout-out the ladies of Eta Eta Lambda Society (www.Instagram.com/
