Meet Leya Starr | Music Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Leya Starr and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Leya, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Taking risk is important because if you don’t you will live your life in routine because your too scared to take a risk and do something that’s out of the ordinary ,chances make champions ! and if your scared to take a chance you might miss out on what can make you a champion . Taking a risk has played a big role in my life and career because I chose a career that isn’t your typical 9-5 and walked by faith not knowing what tomorrow may brings I always keep going no matter what obstacle I face I never give up on myself . One of the biggest risk I took is when I quit my regular call center job in the summer of 2018 to full focus on my music career and by the fall I got my first Record Deal from Iced Up Records/Motown records . I decided not to sign and keep being independent until I find a record deal that’s best for me, but if I never took a risk and quit my job I may have never been presented with that opportunity in the first place. I will always walk by faith and not by sight .

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m a rap artist and song writer. It started off as just a hobby I would do in school to make time go by faster, but the more attention I got from it the more I wanted to keep going. I didn’t know I had real talent until all my friends at school would ask me to rap everyday and encouraged me to take it serious and become a rapper. I seen the positive impact I had on my classmates because of skipping class or getting in trouble in class like we would normally do we started to focus on coming. To class just to rap at one point I had the whole class wrinting raps ! I had to do summer school and at the end of summer school I ended up performing a rap I did to a lil Wayne song and everybody was happy to see me perform from there on then I knew I wanted to be a rapper. By the time I graduated high school 2 years later I was in the radio and going viral over a million views on social media for a freestyle I did it was one of my most proudest moment . Another one of my proudest moment is when Nicki Minaj reposted me on her Instagram. Everyone know Nicki Minaj and young money is who inspired me to rap I was there biggest fan growing up and would always remixed there songs and perform in my mirror as if I was on tour with them lol. What makes me stand out from other rap artist is first of all I’m a woman lol second off I rap with a lot if punchlines and in a metaphoric way a average person would think of. My bars is what always caught people attention even when I was a teen !
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m from Detroit so there not much to do ! But if I was to show someone a good time in my city I would definitely take them downtown . We would go to a night club and after words walk around and mingle and take pictures lol . Downtown used to be considered the hood I actually you to live in the apartments down there named 70 west ! Downtown has came a long way now it looks like a mini New York and probably is the lease dangerous place in the city so yea I would definitely take them downtown. I would take them to the restaurant in the renaissance building on the 71st floor where it’s fancy and you have a wonderful view of the city . On a scale whilst day I would take them to Coney Island lol where they would get chili cheese fries and wings. Coney is like Detroit culture if you never had none you not from Detroit lol

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My family and friends has always believed in me from the first time I rapped in 8th grade. My mom especially has always supported my music career when I first told I her I wanted to rap . She told me if I was serious I had to write a rap everyday and record it (we always had a home studio because my mom used to rap and my step dad was the engineer). I started to write a rap everyday and record everyday and my mom started to take me serious and take me to different studios. I started rapping at 14 and by the time I was 15 I got my first offer from my uncle independent label in which I and my mom who was my manager at the time declined . Looking back I see my mom was teaching me determination and consistency and also perfecting my craft because I got better and better what every rap I wrote. I took my mom and little sister (who was my hype man at the time but is know an up and coming Artist Play,La’Zhea ) with me everywhere I went to every studio session ,meeting ,radio appearance, doesn’t matter where it was ! They was there standing by my side and supporting me. My family and my neighborhood support made me go harder!
