We had the good fortune of connecting with Leslie Lawrence and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Leslie, do you disagree with some advice that is more or less universally accepted?
Whenever you’re about to do something big, everyone tells you to make sure that you’re “ready”. I disagree.
The definition of to be ready is to be easily within reach, and in a suitable state for the activity. Stepping out of your comfort zone isn’t easy and sometimes you have to do it in the most unsuitable conditions.
Instead, be prepared. When you prepare something, you make it ready for use. This is done by planning, fact based research, and studying trends. It’s done by consulting professionals, putting the work in, and creating solutions to problems you may not even have yet.
What should our readers know about your business?
I am the founder of Milk and Honey Medical Institute. We provide entry level job training, educational resources for nursing students, and consulting for aspiring health care entrepreneurs.
What sets us apart is that we have services for everyone that is interested in healthcare, from students, employees, entrepreneurs, and retirees.
Starting Milk and Honey Medical Institute was definitely challenging but the reward was so substantial that sometimes I wouldn’t take back a thing.
During the first year of business I lost my mother, my aunt, my uncle, was a sexual assault survivor… I just couldn’t catch a break.
Consistency has always been key. Even with current day challenges. You have to set the bar, and promise yourself and your customers to never go below it. For me, that meant showing up on depressed days, anxious days, happy days, crying days, insecure days, and learning positive coping mechanisms and having a consistent prayer life to manage my personal trials.
I was able to provide consistency through thorough planning, automations, and enlisting the help and services of others. My best friend Carl has been a huge resource to me in teaching be how to be consistent. He’s introduced me to automation systems, productive goal setting, and operating my business on a corporate scale.
I would want people to know that my brand comes from my passion for serving. My pastor back in East Cleveland once used the term “ladder holder”. It’s a necessary position that serves as a strong foundation for others to climb. That’s what I consider my role. My purpose is to be a ladder holder for anyone who needs someone to hold their ladder while they climb to the top!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If the weather is moderate, we have to go to Piedmont Park. To have a picnic at the park and then see the Botanical Gardens is magical.
Along the lines of lunch, the Rasta Pasta at Blaqhaus is my absolute favorite, even though it’s Marietta.
Ponce City Market is also a must-experience!

The small business culture in Atlanta. There’s a saying that “Atlanta, Georgia changed my life”, and that is an understatement. From volunteering at local farms like Atlanta Harvest, having lunch at Blaqhaus, attending classes at Creative Corner ATL, getting laundry detergent from True laundry detergent, browsing NuFace Nostalgia, going to church at New Birth MBC; small businesses have become apart of everyday life for me. Having these experiences on a daily basis gives me the motivation that my dreams can be a reality.
