We had the good fortune of connecting with Leroy Gordon and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Leroy, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I wanted to a platform to showcase my comedic skills, and the radio stations in my area wouldn’t hire me. Granted all I had was me being funny and a good voice for radio, but they wouldn’t give me the opportunity. So when one door closes another door will open. In my case I had to first build the door to be able to walk through it. So I started The Signal 27 Show, with myself, my wife Lakita Gordon, and four other comics, David, Fabe, Big Chip, and Claudine.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My comedy I can cater to the audience. I consider myself the Mr. 3C’s of comedy. I can do Club, Cooperate, and Christian. I move to the beat of my own drum. I learned that with comedy you have to be willing to share your personal life on stage. I believe you can pull from the world and make a joke, I want a connection. Something that we all can relate to regardless of race or sexual orientation. Being a comedian though you take your lumps, because jokes have to be worked out. You have to be fearless and be ready for the outcome, but never stop working, and don’t through a joke away, just set it aside. I write and record so I don’t forget a premise or a tag to a previous joke, but I’m always working it out. That is one of the purposes for The Signal 27 Show. We are unfiltered and we don’t care about cancel culture. We are not for the faint at heart. If you are easily offended I recommend to not listen to use, but if you want some truth mixed with some funny check us out. Set your Christian on the side of the door until the show is over then pick it back up once you are done listening. Just like Kirk. lol. My comedy mentors that I look up to are the late greats Bernie Mac, & Patrice Oneal for the fearlessness on stage. The ability to say what you want to say, and not care how the audience reacts or having the confidence that you know exactly how they are going to react once you hit the stage. The same goes for Corey Holcomb, one of the best in my opinion. Jim Gaffigan on the writing of a joke. I suggest anyone who loves comedy to check out his bit on bacon. Hilarious! I have had comics tell me what I shouldn’t do because I don’t have the following yet, I have had comics tell me to my face they didn’t think I was going to make it. I have had doors close and slammed in my face for opportunities I thought I should have gotten. I have received more no’s, declines, un-return messages, and interviews where the artist doesn’t even show up after you confirm with them the times and dates. It’s all part of the game in the beginning. There has been times that I ask myself what am I doing this for, then Sunday’s role around and we go live and magic happens.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Ok while you are with me we have to start with a breakfast place. THE METRO DINER, the chicken and waffles, and the syrup mixed with a little hot sauce is the business. Next we can check out the beach, while its a little cool before the sun hits the noon day. In jax it gets hot, or do an escape room with friends or hit up adventure landing for some with water action. If you just want to chill we can rent a bout and travel on the river during the day. Lunch has multiple places, to choose from like Sushi House and Fuji Sushi which is an all you can eat sushi restaurant. If you are not into sushi, then we can go to the Soul Food Bistro, home of home cooking. Afterwards we can hit up one of the two malls here, The avenues, or orange park mall and do some bowling later with games at either Main Event, or Dave and Busters. We can also catch a comedy show at one of the local open mics or visit the comedy zone if you want to laugh. Local sports are the craze if you like high school football or even professional sports with the Jaguars playing. Other honorable mentions would be one of the crab spots lol crazy crab, juicy crab, crabby crab, boiling crawfish or we can go to LIVE Bar and have an adult beverage. If you are looking for more excitement then we head south about two hours and we are in Orlando your choice of them parks and depending on the time of the year you could be in terror by going to halloween horror nights or going to the fun spot for the carnival like them park. We will always have something to do if you hang with me. Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
As a Comedian I have to give credit to my wife Lakita Gordon for believing in me, my comedy brother Ozrick Cooley, when I bombed at a church event, He saw what I could be and gave me some much needed advice and to all those I shared the stage with because to put yourself in a hard position on purpose, and stand in front of strangers and make them laugh takes nerve! As a podcaster/live streamer I have to give credit to a person whom I have never met, but I heard the words he stated. Comedian Corey Holcomb. Who created his platform and stated if I see it then I can created. I saw his show and said to myself I can do that, and The Signal 27 Show was born.
