We had the good fortune of connecting with Lemar Wilson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lemar, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
I grew up in Astoria, Queens with my mom, 3 brothers, and 3 sisters. My father wasn’t around, and later in his teenage years, he passed away from a drug overdose. Growing up in the projects, I saw a lot of drugs being sold and used. My brothers were in and out of jail, so the male figure in my life was who I saw on TV. The more time I spent outside, the more I witnessed the consequences of drug abuse, theft, and violence. Despite being confined to the confines of the projects, I always harbored the belief that there was more to life beyond the 28 buildings, a perspective reinforced by the exposure to broader horizons via television. Although my friends had both parents, I often found myself questioning my circumstances. I never doubted my mother’s efforts, as I regularly spotted my father in the projects, leading me to assume that he preferred residing with my mother over his own children. Disillusioned by numerous unfulfilled promises, I eventually relinquished my pursuit of him. As a teenager, I no longer felt the need for his presence, and instead sought camaraderie with my peers, buoyed by a false sense of invincibility. However, my world shifted when law enforcement officers unjustly detained me under the suspicion of drug use, an incident that compelled me to make a pivotal choice: persist within my existing environment, fraught with unwarranted accusations, or endeavor to forge a new path for myself. I commenced my journey by securing employment at Macy’s, followed by the attainment of my GED, Associate’s degree, and ultimately, a Bachelor’s degree. Throughout this transformation process, I remained steadfast in encouraging those around me to aspire for more, recognizing the imperative nature of such ambition. I continuously bolstered my own spirit, cognizant that the realities portrayed on television were indeed unfolding beyond the confines of the 28 buildings.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am an Educational Leader, Mental Health Advocate, and Author, passionate about helping people uplift their minds before they uplift their phones. With my expertise and experience, I am confident in my ability to make a positive impact on people’s lives and empower them to lead a fulfilling life. This road i’m on isn’t easy when you have to keep going against the belief of some people in your life and even yourself at times. “Am I doing the right thing?, Is this what my gift truly is?, is it worth upsetting people you love?” these are some of the questions that I ask myself and always get the same answer from God…Yes.
its a fight everyday with myself, my family, my career but I keep fighting because I know if I don’t fight I can’t find someone in my phone book that will.
I learn I always have to be a student and learn to listen and be patience because everything will come if you have faith and you believe.
I want the world the world to know we all have a gift and we know it and if you don’t think about the things you do that make you really happy inside, the things you do that you are at your best now think about the effect you put out to show the world that’s where I come in and show you to take your first step into the thing you fear the most. My goal is to help everybody no matter where you come from, no matter your upbringing you MATTER
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would take them back to my old neighborhood so they can see where I grew up and share stories. I would introduce them to people that’s still there and pray they don’t share any embarrassing stories about me. We would visit the Chinese store on 8th Street for their family french fries with ketchup, bbq sauce and hot sauce on both sides with a little salt and people then we would have to top it off with it off with mozzarella sticks and a sweet tea. At night time we would hang out at a place we called the Officials and just crack jokes, tell stories and just hang out until its time to go home.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
of course my mom she’s always told me that I would leave a mark on so many people hearts once you recognize your gift.
I would love to shout my older sister Veronica Wilson for always being my support and truly rooting for me even if it was the smallest win to the biggest win. My sister has been my support system since I started speaking, when I started writing my book even getting certified as a motivational speaker.
Two other people that has had my back since I started is my two brothers William Green and Andrew Rose. They show so much support and understanding to what I truly love to do and they see how happy I am when i’m helping people around the world.
They’re my motivation.
