We had the good fortune of connecting with Lázara Santana Alvarez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lázara, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Risk has been a guiding force in my journey as a musician, shaping the very essence of my growth and progress. Growing up in Cuba, a country brimming with cultural richness but limited opportunities for aspiring musicians, instilled in me the profound importance of taking bold leaps to pursue my dreams.
Leaving my family and homeland behind to pursue a master’s degree in Music Performance at Georgia State University was no small feat. It was a leap into the unknown, filled with uncertainties and fears. But I knew that staying in my comfort zone would only lead to stagnation. So, with determination in my heart, I embraced the risk and embarked on this life-changing journey.
Being an immigrant in a foreign land was a humbling experience. It challenged me in ways I never imagined. But with each challenge came growth. Immersing myself in Georgia’s vibrant musical community, I sought guidance from experienced mentors who helped shape me not just as a musician, but as a person.
Today, as I look back on my journey, I’m grateful for the opportunities that risk-taking has opened up for me. Beyond music, I’m exploring entrepreneurship, driven by a desire to share my passion and contribute to the artistic world.
In essence, risk-taking has been my companion, guiding me towards growth, resilience, and endless possibilities. While the path may be uncertain, the rewards of daring to take risks are truly invaluable.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My journey in the world of music has been one of continuous growth, exploration, and evolution. Having completed my master’s degree in Music Performance, I embarked on a path focused on honing my skills as a musician while simultaneously engaging in auditions, teaching, and collaborating with impactful nonprofit organizations such as the Atlanta Music Project and CAYO.
These experiences have been instrumental in shaping not only my musical abilities but also my understanding of the transformative power of music in the community. Through teaching and collaboration, I’ve witnessed firsthand the profound impact that music can have on the lives of young individuals, particularly when coupled with mentorship and support.
However, my professional journey has taken a new turn in recent times, as I’ve shifted my focus towards entrepreneurship with the establishment of Santana Music. This venture is more than just a business; it’s an embodiment of my passion for music education and performance, coupled with a commitment to providing bilingual academic formation to youth. Santana Music aims to bridge cultural divides and empower young minds through music, offering them access to experienced and professional instructors who can guide them on their musical journey.
Moreover, Santana Music seeks to enrich the community by providing live music for all types of events, from intimate gatherings to large-scale celebrations. Our goal is to create memorable experiences through music, fostering a sense of unity and connection among people of diverse backgrounds.
While my path hasn’t been without its challenges, each obstacle has been a learning opportunity, teaching me resilience, adaptability, and the importance of perseverance. Through dedication and determination, I’ve overcome hurdles and continued to pursue my passion for music with unwavering commitment.
Ultimately, what sets me apart is not just my musical talent, but my dedication to using music as a tool for positive change in the world. My story is one of resilience, growth, and a deep-seated belief in the transformative power of music. With Santana Music, I hope to inspire others to embrace the beauty of music and its ability to unite and uplift communities across the globe.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
When envisioning a memorable tour of Atlanta for my friends, I’ve crafted an exciting itinerary that showcases the city’s dynamic culture and breathtaking natural landscapes. Our adventure begins with an awe-inspiring visit to the Georgia Aquarium, followed by a leisurely stroll through the tranquil Atlanta Botanical Garden. We’ll then delve into Atlanta’s rich history at the Atlanta History Center before immersing ourselves in the captivating performances of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and the Atlanta Ballet. Of course, no trip to Atlanta would be complete without savoring a delicious brunch at the charming Bagel Boys Cafe in Dunwoody. After energizing ourselves, we’ll embark on outdoor escapades at scenic parks like the Falls at Roswell Mill Trailhead and the Historic Fourth Ward Park. And let’s not miss exploring iconic attractions such as the World of Coca-Cola and the vibrant Krog Street Tunnel. To top it all off, we’ll venture to the Zoo for a dose of wildlife excitement, but I have a surprise in store: a thrilling safari drive at North Georgia Safari Park. This adventure has been on my bucket list, and I can’t wait to share it with my friends!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I am deeply moved to extend my heartfelt appreciation to several individuals, groups, and organizations whose unwavering support has profoundly shaped not only my musical journey but I’m sure that of many others as well.
First and foremost, I am incredibly grateful to Erick Varner for his steadfast belief in my talent, even during times of self-doubt. It was his encouragement that, despite life’s circumstances, led me to attend the Glickman-Popkin Bassoon Camp—a truly transformative experience. There, I had the privilege of meeting extraordinary individuals like Lisa Alexander, Leonard Hindel, Paul Nordby, and my Barton Cane friends. Their remarkable willingness to lend a helping hand was nothing short of inspiring. Their mentorship and unwavering support not only bolstered my confidence but also reinforced my belief in my own potential as a musician. I am profoundly grateful to Erick and each of them for the profound impact they have had on my musical journey and undoubtedly on the journeys of countless others.
Additionally, I owe a debt of gratitude to CAYO for their unwavering commitment to supporting and empowering Cuban musicians like myself. Through their initiatives, they have created invaluable exchange opportunities that have enriched my musical journey and broadened my horizons in ways I never thought possible.
Moreover, I want to express my sincere appreciation to the Havana Lyceum Orchestra, where I honed my skills as an orchestral musician before embarking on my journey to the United States. The orchestra not only provided me with a platform to showcase my talents but also instilled in me the values of musicianship, collaboration, and teamwork, which continue to serve as guiding principles on my path.
Each of these individuals, groups, and organizations has played an indispensable role in shaping not only my musical trajectory but also that of countless others. Their unwavering support, mentorship, and belief in our potential have been the driving forces behind our growth and success. It is with deep gratitude and humility that I dedicate this shoutout to them, recognizing the profound and lasting impact they have had on our collective musical journeys.
