We had the good fortune of connecting with Lawanda Davis and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lawanda, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I wanted to sell Affordable Clothing with great Quality. I’ve never been a materialistic girl or been into all the labels and stuff like that. It’s just not me. I do like to look pretty when I step out, to feel good, and all without living beyond my means. It was a no-brainer for me when deciding what kind of fashion I would sell. Having loungewear, active sets, and other lovely pieces that you can dress up or down was essential to me. Clothes that are comfortable and make you feel good.
No matter who my customer is, I want them to leave feeling celebrated with pieces that emphasize the beauty that’s already there.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I started my business back in 2019 after resigning from my job of almost seven years. I loved it, but I was ready for something different, ready to start doing something for myself outside of work Before starting my business, I’d transitioned from one job and started another one where I made a little more money. The other job was very stressful, and I didn’t have enough time to do anything for myself, whereas this new job afforded me a little more free time after work.
With less stress and more time, I could really focus on what it is I love and how to make a career out of it. I’m still currently working that job full time plus my business full time.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Bloomington is famous for its love of dining out, a fact verified by national statistics that each year rank the Twin Cities among the nation’s top 50 cities in the U.S. per capital for dining out. We don’t have a whole bunch to do here though. It’s pretty much like a campus town as we do have one of the D1 Colleges here.
I will say that it’s a lot safer here then most cities.
I love to go out t for
Dinner and drinks. Most of the time I go to some of the closet cites to enjoy myself.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to first say thank you to my two young men (La’Wuan and Mar’Quan) I saw that they didn’t need me as much as they grew older. I’m such a hands-on kind of mom, and as time progressed, I realized I didn’t really do anything else outside of caring for them and working for other people. Them along with my mama Rae Rae encouraged me to go after my dreams. They’ve been so supportive since day one.
I also want to shoutout to my city Bloomington. I’ve received so much support from so many people there. I’ve also received support from friends/family in other states.
