Meet Lauryn Bass | Multimedia Journalist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Lauryn Bass and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lauryn, how do you think about risk?
I think the risks you take to better yourself are worth it. I definitely believe advocating for myself even when all odds were against me has played a positive role in my life and career. Going into a situation knowing that God is fighting for you, it’s an act of faith. I am a firm believer that if your intentions are pure, you’ll go far.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My career has grown so much from journalism student to media professional. I’ve completed a full year in what I like to call my first “big girl job,” as a news reporter/lifestyle correspondent at News 3 in Norfolk and now, I’m on to my next thing back home in Atlanta.
What sets me apart is that I am a good listener. One of best pieces of advice I’ve been given is to be a sponge and to be able to adapt. I’ve been able to learn from any person that I’ve come across by taking the time to let someone else shine or to just take the time to move focus away from myself.
I’m most proud of being able to say that I have been able to brand myself around my genuine personality and not someone else idea of the “perfect image.” Those close to me know I struggled with the idea of wearing my natural hair on air in a top 50 market, and thankfully at WTKR I was able to be authentic and my first time live in studio on Coast Live, my Afro is in full effect.
Professionally, I’ve been able to get through so many doors thanks to so many professors and mentors that I’ve gained during my journey at my alma mater, Hampton University. We truly do have a “Home by the Sea” and that has continued to be present as an alum.
My journey has not been easy, every day brings new challenges. Whether that’s physically, mentally, socially, or emotionally. The way I’ve learned to overcome life when it’s ‘life-ing’ is to just breathe, pray, let things go and keep moving forward. I feel through my feelings and reach out to my circle when needed, and always know that I’ll be okay.
What I would love to remember about my brand is that I love to tell enterprising stories about minority businesses in my community. I love uplifting others who are trying to make a positive difference in others or themselves. I am all for personal development and self-care! I’ve experienced bullying, harassment, physical harm, heartbreak, injuries and so many things that could’ve broken me down and held me back. But here I am still blessed and making a way. God is so real.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my friend was visiting me and I wanted it to be a fun time, I would take them to Toast on Lennox for brunch for sure. We’d get lit on mimosas and then head to Perimeter mall. I love to shop, but I also love handmade items so I would make my way to Little Five Points as well to see if there’s a black-owned business that I can check out for some new crystals, plants, waist beads, or artwork.
After, we could go downtown and hand in Perimeter park, possibly work a little if this is a week trip and relax. I really love picnics so we could snack and hook it up luxury style with candles and pillows. At night, we could hit up Opium or Sound night club for some vibes and like anyone else who knows me, end up in a Waffle House before heading home to crash, haha.
There’s so much to see that Atlanta has to offer, any day is good to just explore how large it is and how it’s such a melting pot.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I dedicate my success to the family and friends that God blessed me with! Shoutout to those who continue to support me during each phase of my life.
