We had the good fortune of connecting with Lauren Mccall and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lauren, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking.
I think about risk when it comes to my career as the willingness to pursue new opportunities, even if they are outside of my comfort zone. Also, as many people have noticed about the arts, some doors will open and some doors won’t, but a lot of the time, it will be a numbers game, so I like to pursue opportunities even if, at first glance, I may think that I don’t fit it.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I was able to get to where I am today because of the support of my family and mentors, including Dr. Jason Freeman, Dr. Gary Nash, Mr. Rudy Cleare, and Dr. Jonathan McNair. My journey has not been easy, but it’s still been good. Originally, I started writing on my own and was a closet composer for many years. Eventually, one of my friends mentioned joining a professional organization, and that is where I was able to have my first composition performed. Through the Southeastern Composers League, I met mentors and eventually went back to school to study music, and slowly but surely, I’ve been able to compose for various opportunities.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If I had a friend visit, I would take them to different locations around Atlanta, like Piedmont Park and the Beltline. I would also take them to Open Mic night at Kat’s and to the Krog Street Tunnel and enjoy some of the historic sites around Atlanta, like the Sweet Auburn district.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to dedicate my shoutout to my family.
