We had the good fortune of connecting with Lauren Howard and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lauren, why did you pursue a creative career?
I love it! I’ve always been participating in the arts! I was always in art or drama in school, all the while trying my hand at artistic side jobs/businesses. Being creative is my outlet, and I feel it enables me to be my best self.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I discovered cosplay in 2012 when my friend took me to a local anime convention. I had no idea that people dressed up as their favorite fictional characters outside of Halloween. I was hooked. Now almost 10 years later I am still learning and getting better every day! I try to incorporate inclusiveness into my costuming and brand. I work for 2 different non-profits that promote education and independence for people with disabilities. Cosplay started as a fun hobby and still is the majority of the time. However, I realized I can use my hobby and art for good by promoting inclusiveness and advocating through my brand. I am still growing and learning both in my art and advocacy. I got where I am today because of the people that support me. Without my friends and family’s support, I would not be where I am at today. There are some points where I wanted to quit because of negativity or hate. However, I realized I shouldn’t put my worth in the hands of others so it has just pushed me to be better. I want to make sure everyone has equal opportunity and open space for them!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend was visiting me I would take them around to show them certain filming locations! Almost all of my friends are huge geeks and love movies. That’s one of the first things I wanted to do as soon as I got into Atlanta myself. Food-wise, the possibilities are endless! The absolute variety and quality of the food is amazing and there is not a shortage of good choices. I love the aquarium! It is so beautiful, and peaceful to me. I think everyone that comes to Atlanta should go to the aquarium. DragonCon, of course, is my favorite event in Atlanta!! I always go with friends, because it’s better with others!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would love to shout out my friends and family! They push me to be my very best and encourage me always. Without them, I would not be where I am at today. Shout out to my friends who allow me to be my authentic self and are by my side no matter what. Thank you to my family that has supported me through the really tough times and that providing love when I needed it.
