We had the good fortune of connecting with Laura Douglas and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Laura, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
Over the years, I’ve learned to always end the work day with some sort of exercise. After a certain point in the day, my work efficiency and drive can run a little dry. It’s at this point that I know I need to change pace and get away from the screen in order to restore my sense of balance and peace. I find that allowing myself the time to get outside and go for a walk is so beneficial for my mind and body.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’ve been drawing for as long as I can remember, so choosing the creative path felt innate and inevitable. If you were to look back at my early school notes, you’d see the margins decorated with elaborate doodles and nonsense storylines. It was around elementary school when I discovered my love and need for creativity. Following the advice of teachers and friends, I pursued a BFA in graphic design at the University of Georgia. After graduating, I started working for a small studio in Atlanta and was part of various branding and illustration projects. I’m thankful for all the teachers, creative directors and clients who have played a key role in my experience thus far. – As a designer and illustrator, it’s important to stay receptive and empathetic to your audiences. I most enjoy brand identity projects–the kinds where you can construct brands from the ground up. It can be a real fun and enjoyable process to concept, explore, build, and foster a brand to exist and thrive in various applications. I’m constantly trying to learn more about who I am creating for and for what purpose. I’m a big believer in the power of positivity, so I consistently work with an easygoing attitude and always try to communicate constructively with others. A positive attitude and team can create some powerful work.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Places ––––– Piedmont Park Botanical Gardens High Museum Restaurants ––––– Any restaurants in East Atlanta: Argosy, Gaja Korean Bar, Banshee
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The reason why I am doing what I am doing is because of the friends and mentors I am blessed to have in my life. Following the advice of teachers and friends in high school, I pursued a BFA in graphic design at the University of Georgia. I immediately felt connected to the practice and liked how design required beauty, brains and a handful of inspired visual solutions. It was there that I met some amazing teachers who helped guide and refine my design sensibilities and skills. After graduating, I started working for a small studio in Atlanta and was part of various branding and illustration projects. I’m thankful for all the teachers, creative directors and clients who have played a key role in my experience thus far.
