We had the good fortune of connecting with Latoya Whitfield and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Latoya, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
For most of my life I played it safe. I was taught to go to college so that you can get a great job with benefits. For most of my childhood I dreamed of impacting the world through entrepreneurship. I never heard these types of conversations. If I did, it mostly resulted in negativity. The biggest risk that I have taken in my career was leaving my corporate job. I was so unhappy. I’m sure I cried regularly for 4 years. I knew I had to stop feeling sorry for myself and do something. As I left my job, I had the adrenaline rush that most would have before doing something big. As I began to turn in my 2 weeks’ notice, knots came in my stomach, and I heard a voice say ” remember when your business failed in 2016.” Yes, that was doubt speaking loudly. I can’t deny that fear crept in, but I knew that my purpose was too big to stay there. I left my job May 2021 and the doors that have opened for me have been beyond anything that I could have imagined. My faith in God is the only reason why the risk did not break me but made me stronger.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
A Queenpreneur’s Plan was birthed in May 2021 when I saw the desire for women to become full time entrepreneurs. Much like myself, women wanted to do what they love full time and did not enjoy their current job. After preparing myself for the exit, I knew it was time to help others. My goal is to help women overcome limiting beliefs that keep them from making the money that they desire in their businesses through 1:1 coaching, group coaching, and speaking events. I am mostly proud when my mentees reach out to me and say things like, “coach you really helped me to believe in myself” or coach I just closed a 4-figure client.” One of my biggest excitements was becoming a co-author of Freedom Over Fear where I talked about my journey and how money mindset and purpose were pertinent to my success.

Many times, we need to realize that we should never despise small beginnings. In 2016, my first business failed due to lack of self-esteem and lack of business acumen. After just six months, the business was shut down. I became comfortable with remaining in corporate America, but I always knew I was meant to be a leader, not a dictator. That is what I experienced for 4 years at my previous job. Honestly, I don’t know if I would have moved as fast had I not experienced it. Right as the pandemic hit in 2020, I was moved to share my expertise with the world via social media, for FREE! That’s right for free. What I didn’t know is that I was creating a platform that moved people to trust me. The challenge that I faced is that I didn’t have systems in place when people were ready to buy. Furthermore, I was not clear on my target audience. I wanted to serve everyone…BIG MISTAKE.

I found myself having to start over and this was scary. However, it ended up being the best pivot that I could have ever taken. How I started was just my vehicle to get to A Queenpreneur’s Plan. So that was my biggest lesson; don’t be afraid to pivot. Yes I lost money by starting over, but what I gained tripled. The process may be rocky, but it will be all worth it.

I want everyone to know that A Queenpreneur’s Plan was created for women of faith that need to ignite purpose and believe in themselves again. It is for women that need to find the value in themselves and in their businesses. If you are not making the money that you desire in your business, it is simply a limited belief that is keeping you from going forward and taking the necessary leaps. If you have a money mindset, you will NEVER be “broke”.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my bestie was visiting Huntsville, AL, I would take her to a comedy show either and the Von Braun Center or Stand Up Live. Laughing is good for the soul and that would release those endorphins. Next, we would grab some great food from Heavy Flavors by Todd Dobbins, “heavy on the flavor.” It is the best kept secret and exclusive for now. Lastly, we would go to a live concert by some local artists. One of my favorites, is Meme Jones. Her music always makes me cry—in a good way!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
In this moment I would like to shoutout my coach Rebecca Merzius. Prior to meeting her, I did not have any systems or strategies in place. She pushed me beyond my potential and taught me how to package my expertise. I shared so many moments with her and when doubt started to kick in, she was right there to encourage me on my journey. I show my gratitude to her for simply being a role model for what I aspired my future to look like. This is what led to my pivot in May 2021– to serve purpose driven women of faith.

Also, I want to shout out Dr. Yvonne Briggs of Start Now Success for nominating me for this article. Additionally, I want to thank her for choosing me to be featured in her Start Now Success 2020 edition. It created exposure to so many opportunities and likeminded entrepreneurs.

Lastly, I would like to thank my husband. While this journey was different than anything we have encountered, he has supported my journey to full time “Queenpreneurship.” I’m also thankful for my children. They helped me to see what it really meant to live a purpose driven life.
