We had the good fortune of connecting with LaToya Jones and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi LaToya, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
When I first thought about creating hair products, I wanted women, especially minority women, to have professional, high-quality hair products created specifically for them that they could use at home. Not everyone has the opportunity to go to a salon on a regular basis, but your hair doesn’t have to reflect that. Haircare is a part of self-care and I wanted to provide women, even those who are not natural, with products that would give them salon results even while they are in between salon visits.

What should our readers know about your business?
The by L. Jones motto is “All Hair Can Be Good Hair”. Being a hairstylist, I often hear women refer to their hair as “nappy” or they will say they don’t have “good hair”. And with so many women embracing their natural hair, most of the hair products on the market now are designed with that in mind. What sets me apart is that I provide products for those that still have chemically treated hair, whether it is relaxed or permanently colored, in addition to having products for natural hair. We also have products that are designed to prevent and reverse damaged hair. We believe that good hair simply means healthy hair. So, all hair can in fact be good hair. We also provide our email subscribers, also known as BLJ Beauties, with helpful hair tips in addition to simply providing products.

I am most proud of the fact that I was able to create hair care formulas in my kitchen without being a scientist, but instead relying on my knowledge of hair and they actually work and make women feel good about their hair. It did take a lot of trial, error, and some failed attempts, but that is just a part of it. I got to where I am today by taking risks and trying new things even when I was not sure of what the outcome would be.

When people ask me if what I do is easy, my first instinct is to say no. But the more I think about it, the actual tasks are not necessarily hard, but there are a lot of them and they require consistency, and consistency can be hard when you don’t see the results you want right away. I would tell anyone that has a dream to stick with it. We often focus on the end goal but I have learned that it is important to enjoy the journey as well.

I want people to know that by L. Jones is dedicated to making people feel more confident about themselves through hair care. We know that when you look good, you feel good, and our products are here to help you do just that!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
When my best friends come around, it’s definitely time to relax and unwind! Our itinerary would include spa trips to Ross Bridge for massages, mani/pedi appointment, daily brunches w/mimosas at Ruby Sunshine, dinner & drinks downtown, and lots of SHOPPING!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My husband, who is my biggest supporter, definitely deserves a shoutout! Before I was a hairstylist, I worked in corporate America and quickly realized I wanted something different. I was so scared to jump out there into something different and he not only encouraged me, but allowed me to quit my corporate job as he held down the home financially until I built my clientele up, which he also helped me do! I definitely would not be where I am today without his love, support, and encouragement!
