We had the good fortune of connecting with Lativia Henderson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lativia, career-wise, where do you want to be in the end?
The end goal for my business is to be a successful, well known fashion designer. I want people to know and recognize my brand. I’ve worked hard & consistent over the years to build Brown Royal Creations into the thriving business it is today. I am passionate about my craft. It truly makes me happy seeing people wear a custom garment that I’ve made. I always thank my clients and customers because its so easy to pick out or order an “off the rack” garment YET they chose to support my business. That means so much to me. Even the people who have never worn anything I’ve made supports me by telling someone about the services my business offers. I don’t like to openly speak too much of my goals because I believe in doing the work and setting things in place first before announcing anything prematurely. I will say one day I will expand into a gown boutique. I really enjoy making bridal and prom gowns so one day that will be my target focus of my business. Brown Royal Boutique… hmmm I think that does have a nice ring to it.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Fashion allows me to be creative as possible. There’s no right or wrong way, so I take that and be me. Custom made is just that, CUSTOM. I feel like fashion is a nonverbal statement, a mood. I dress and create however I feel. I’m most excited when I design for other people. Its so easy to make my own clothes, but when I can design for a whole other body type and it turns out a perfect fit, that is what excites me. I’ve been shy and soft spoken my whole life so its always challenging displaying a craft to be critiqued and judged by consumers. Over time I’ve learned that you will not please everyone 100% and everyone will not support or care about what you have to offer and all of that is okay. Its okay to mess up, its okay to fail, it’s okay to not be everyone’s first choice. Do your best, try again, remain professional, and go hard for the integrity of yourself and your business!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to shoutout my circle of friends and family who keeps me encouraged, and motivated since I’ve started my journey of entrepreneurship. I also want to shoutout anyone who has ever booked me for a service or referred someone to me, I would not love my career if it wasn’t for you all.
