We had the good fortune of connecting with LaTasha Bosby and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi LaTasha, do you disagree with some advice that is more or less universally accepted?
That you can’t be a mom and a full time entrepreneur at the same time. So many times people try to tell you that you have to be one or the other. People tell you to focus on your children but the whole reason I started it was for my children. Not just because I loved making treats for them and their classmates but because I wanted something I could grow for them and they can possibly take over when they are older.
What should our readers know about your business?
I started Ooh LaLa Sweet Eats in 2013. As a stay-at-home mom, I started making treats for my daughters’ classes. I found out that not only did the kids like them, but the adults loved them too. It went from class treats to treats for the teachers and then sometimes treats for school events. I originally wanted to be the mom that helped other parents as well. I wanted to offer treats for parents who wanted cute, tasty treats for their children but did not have time to make them themselves. It soon turned into more than that. I realized that I could do so much more, so I decided to invest into myself.
Many of the treats I make, I taught myself but I also purchased different classes to learn what I was unfamiliar with. There are a several dessert makers that I follow who offer some of the most informative classes. I believe that you should always keep learning and trying to be better. So that’s what I continued to do. I would make treats for my family and friends to try. They loved them. I decided to start selling but business was always a little slow. The holidays would be good, but the rest of the year would be little to no business. I started to get discouraged and said I was not going to do it. I went to school and got my esthetician license and even my insurance adjusters license, but nothing made me as happy as baking and making treats.
When I got pregnant with my third daughter in 2016, I put everything on hold. She was born prematurely and passed away at 6 weeks old. This put me into a downward spiral. The depression was real. Trying to navigate depression is already hard for one person but trying to do it for you, your spouse, and your young daughters was a whole different ballgame. It took me about 2-3 years to really get myself together. I finally decided that the only way for me to get back to me was to really put my all into my business. Then covid hit! My business was little to none. Around Thanksgiving, everyone was making cocoa bombs. I said I was not going to do it. My cousin called and asked for them and I could not say no, I gave it a try, posted, and my business started to boom. I was so thankful and grateful for all the support. It lit a fire that I thought was gone.
I have learned that no matter how many setbacks there are in your life, you must keep going. Never stop pushing forward towards your goals. Of all the jobs I have had this is by far my favorite. The community of bakers and treatmakers that I have followed and gotten to know as I build my business has been amazing. Everyone is always rooting for each other and always willing to help. I am not where I want to be, but I am so excited about where I and Ooh LaLa Sweet Eats are going.
Ooh LaLa may have started as making treats for elementary school classes but has become the treats for girls’ night, birthday parties, family gatherings, etc. My cookies and cakes are made from scratch with fresh ingredients, and I have also taken the time to learn how to make gluten-free options for those who often feel left out at the party. Having the opportunity to create something beautifully sweet to make others and their taste buds happy brings me so much joy. My hope is that when someone tastes my treats or cakes, they feel the love I put into their order. I want them to incite that good nod of the head or your go to dance in your seat. LOL Whether it is a Sweets Charcuterie board, a caramel wrapped pretzel, a bling strawberry or even if it’s a regular vanilla pound cake, I want you to say “Ooh LaLa” and have the SWEETEST day ever!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Ok. So I’ve given this some thought before. LOL I’m always sharing places with my close girlfriends who don’t live here. I absolutely love Big Dave’s Cheesesteaks for the eggrolls of course. I live for the salmon eggroll and the chicken eggroll with a water ice. We are hitting Atlanta Breakfast Club for that peach cobbler french toast and Milk and Honey. I love Harold’s Chicken for the whole wings and fries with sauce on everything but there’s a little spot called Amazing Wings in Norcross that has something that I normally can’t get here. I’m from Birmingham and our wing spots offer Ranch cheese fries. Amazing Wings is the only place here where I can get Honey Lemon Pepper wings with a side of ranch cheese fries and a peach drink. It truly reminds me of home. Now for drinks, I’m calling Yoshi at Daquiris to Go. She delivers to you and her drinks are amazing. My favorite is the strawberry mango. For Mexican, I’m hitting La Hacienda in Midtown. Their food and drinks are great. Hanging out, I love Ponce City Market’s rooftop, Whiskey Blu, City Winery, and Punchbowl Social. I’ve been here for 20 years and I can say that the most wonderful thing about Atlanta is that there are always places you have never seen or hidden gems people don’t know about. Even the ones that are on the map, are still some of my favorite places to go. I’m kind of a foodie so we are eating the entire time. LOL Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My husband, Dwayne, has been my rock. He supports me in everything, encourages me, and pushes me even when I don’t want to be pushed.
My daughters, London, Aiden, and my angel baby Ryan Avery. They are my reason for doing this and the force that drives me to keep going no matter what.
My mom and my mother-in-love have been big supporters from day one. My mom helps me with my day to day from running errands to even tying bows. My MIL keeps the encouragement coming and will help with anything I need.
My close girlfriends are true Ooh LaLa cheerleaders! The encouragement they give is amazing. They are always down to let me run ideas by them, tasting new treats, lend a helping hand, and patronize my business like any other. They wouldn’t take a discount even if I tried. Lol
To all my SWEETS that follow, like, share, and are customers of Ooh LaLa Sweet Eats, I say thank you from the bottom of my heart.
I couldn’t do it without any of these people. My tribe is strong and I’m forever grateful.
