We had the good fortune of connecting with LaShonda North and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi LaShonda, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
The thought process behind starting my own business came very simple and plain. I actually didn’t even realize how much I loved baking until I met and began working under my mentor Lindsay Gardner in 2009. Lindsay thought me everything I know today through physical lessons, hands on projects, and allowing me to take on projects of my own within her company. Fast forward to January 2020 unfortunately Lindsay won her battle with colon cancer. I spent many days at her side and on the last day I was able to hear her speak Lindsay told me not to allow her dream to end. For me to continue on her legacy and not to let Delicious Treasures (her company) die. In October of 2020 I decided it was time and in January of 2021 I officially opened my own company named Delicious Treasures2! Lindsay’s legacy lives on through me. Along with Lindsay’s inspiration and teachings, I owe my biggest supporters my best friends Iesha Parker and Kia Jones, as well as my family, huge thank you’s for all the pushing they do for me! They all keep me going with my business!
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My business DT2 is a full service bakery. We provide cakes, cupcakes, pies, cookies, chocolate confections, and candies of all sorts. If you can think of it I can make it for you. DT2 is set apart from others because with us being so small every item is made completely out of love. I joke and say that if I wouldn’t eat it I’m not serving it when in actuality it is the truth. I put my heart in every item that leaves my kitchen. Unfortunately not every bakery business is going to or even have the time to put love in what they do. No matter how big or small an order is I’m putting my all into every item. One of the biggest lessons I have learned while building my business to what it is today is, “Ask for help!” I used to be that person that always wanted to take care of everything on my own no matter how stressful or big, I would put it all on me knowing I have a support team! I’ve also learned to charge my worth. Budgeting was tough when I wasn’t doing so but talking to other business owners in my field definitely helped that problem. If I had to tell anyone a portion of my story to remember forever it would be to allow someone to see your potential and take the encouragement they offer because they see your heart, your strength, and wisdom. No matter how much you doubt yourself use their encouragement to push you to your goals and dreams.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My favorite places in the city that are a must:
Food- Nuevo Laredo Cantina- a small mom and pop Mexican restaurant but they’re food is AMAZING!! The best margaritas poured and some of the most amazing service ever! I take everyone to this place and recommend it often!
Fun things to do in Atlanta, I was recently introduced to Putt Shack by a friend and absolutely loved it, call me a big kid but I love Main Event!! The High museum of art and the botanical gardens are always full of beautiful art pieces and structures..
Hangouts or just out about places find a park like Piedmont for a picnic and some of the best people watching you can find. Checkout the belt line for some awesome eats, drinks and chill spots.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My shoutout is without question is dedicated to the same person my business is dedicated to Lindsay Sumbry-Gardner. I wouldn’t be a baker or in business without her. She was the best teacher and mentor I could have ever asked for. It is my life goal to make her proud and continue her legacy. All of my hands on supporters as well deserve a shoutout, they help me as is if they’re my employees with no hesitation!
