We had the good fortune of connecting with LaPortia Frazier and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi LaPortia, what is the most important factor behind your success?
We believe the most important factor behind the success of T.R.I.B.E. Of Georgia, Incorporated is the support of family and friends. T.R.I.B.E.’s , as we affectionately like to call our organization, mission is to create a safe space for women to become their higher selves. We seek to mentor and encourage high school aged young ladies by focusing on our four Jewels :Friendship, Community, Life Skills and Wellness. In our first year of operating we relied on friends and family for fundraising, volunteering and spreading the news about our non-profit organization. The Jewels that we chose to instill in our mentees are the very things that we needed ourselves . Our journey with T.R.I.B.E. is teaching us to tap into our resources. As we use social media and word mouth to gain exposure , more people have contacted us to collaborate on various projects. At some point we all need support from someone else. We are happy to know that T.R.I.B.E. has surrounded itself with people who want to see and be apart of the success. With that in mind , we can say the organization is living to its name.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Angera , is a social worker by trade . She graduated from Clark Atlanta University with a Masters of Social Work Degree. However, her newest role is being a mother to her beautiful son. She has been hit with many challenges but, I have watched her continue to overcome them. One of her favorite words is resilient and, I believe it describes her perfectly . I like to call Angera, the Coach, because she is a motivator. She pushes herself and anyone else around her to be their best. I (LaPortia ), have a Masters of Public Health Degree from Mercer University and currently work in the HIV field. To get to where I am now it took a lot of dedication and support from family and friends. I am a first generation Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree recipient. College was challenging both times but , I had to stay grounded and focus on the goal. I stumbled into Public Health after working in different areas of the medical field. Working with HIV positive clients, my job can be tough yet rewarding. Collectively we have learned to remain humble, to lean on our faith and stay dedicated to what we are doing. We want the world to know that we are young black women from the westside and southside of Atlanta , whose goal is to give to other young women what our mentors gave to us. We have our feet on the ground and we are ready to do work!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We definitely recommend visiting IWI Fresh Farm Oasis! If you don’t know about IWI it’s time for you to learn. You can go there to relax with a yoni steam, body scrub or simply just sit and chill. IWI has a lot to offer. They have beautiful handcrafted jewelry and scarves from IssaWrap for sale . Triton Yards would be a spot for us to get some good food from the food trucks and have a little outdoor fun. We must hit the Atlanta Beltline and The Battery before the trip ends. For some nice spoken word , music and good vibes Apache Cafe is where it’s at. For some good drinks or partying we could hit Suite Lounge, Cirque Daquiri Bar and Grill or BQE . We love a good brunch ! Gocha’s Breakfast Bar or The Real Milk and Honey would be the brunch spots of choice.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
