We had the good fortune of connecting with Lanada Chanel and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lanada, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
Helping others and working hard has never really been a problem for me. Knowing how to achieve harmony and balance, however, has. It was only a few years ago when the hustle mindset became a growing phenomenon and everything you heard and read said, “hustle hard,” “get it done,” “never stop,” “go get it” – all the time. And while that’s not necessarily bad, those charges are missing an important ending – “hustle hard but take breaks, too.” I adopted that “go, go, go” mindset most of my adult life until some personal health problems helped me see that I needed to make a change. As a business owner, I believe you should be diligent and focused on setting and achieving your goals. You have to push towards to greater levels in your industry, but self-care has to be the first priority. If you don’t put it first, you will lack good health and positive energy to enjoy life when you achieve success. I want to enjoy life and enjoy growing my business at the same time. So, I’ve made self-care a priority. It’s a decision and a mind-set for real achievers as far as I’m concerned.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I started b.e. decors about 6 years ago because I love interior decorating and have a passion for using my skills as a decorator to create live, work, and play sanctuary environments that help eliminate stress and provide a sense of tranquility for my clients. b.e. decors is a full-service interior design firm. We offer design services and products for the professional who prefers to dwell in an environment that caters to their total wellness, personality, and style – so creating a peaceful experience for the client is our No. 1 goal. My love for decorating dates back to growing up in Philadelphia where sharing bedrooms and later apartments with my big sister also meant learning how to maximize spaces and style them so that they offered beauty, comfort, functionality and style for the best budget. So, I designed services to fit most budgets and they can be tailored to suit just about any need.
As a mother of two adult boys, I understand how challenges in life can affect our ability to create the kind of home we desire for our family. This can leave us feeling inadequate as a caring and loving parent or depleted and void of energy and the confidence needed to care for ourselves. I experienced this after a divorce several years ago and spent the last 15 years of my life realizing that true wellbeing and creating a real home you can enjoy starts from the inside.
Therefore, products and services of b.e. decors will always align with positive self-care for all phases of life. As our clients move from one chapter of life to another, they can trust us to provide products to enhance their well-being spiritually, emotionally, and physically. As women progress in their career and their family dynamics change, their mental and physical needs change as well. So, we offer products and services specifically designed for women in all age ranges within our demographic.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I live in Roswell and I love it! When friends and family visit, my husband and I usually take them to Canton Street in downtown Roswell. It has a small town, hip, historic vibe that’s unfortunately fleeting because of all the development going on around it, but there are still many treasures and various options in the area for eating, shopping and exploring, and the community is overflowing with diverse people. We also love driving up into the Georgia mountains to some of the beautiful wineries. The views are fantastic and there are a few good vineyards you can visit, bring a picnic basket (or enjoy restaurants onsite), buy a few bottles of vino, meet new people, and have a great time enjoying the scenic views.
During the late summer or autumn season is the best time to visit. I tell visitors that Atlanta and its surrounding counties have some of the best parks, museums, and places to eat and tour. I’ve lived here now for over 25 years and it’s never disappointed me with choices for any of these, especially food or entertainment. I’ve seen some of the best shows here: Gregory Porter, Harry Connick Jr., New Edition, Public Enemy – just to name a few. And had some of the best BBQ from places like the Greater Good in Sandy Springs or Fox Bros. in Atlanta. And, just recently, found a good cheesesteak spot in Atlanta called Big Dave’s, owned by a guy from my hometown – Philadelphia.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My mother is a strong influence in my life, and she represents the kind of woman I hope to become. She instilled a sense of pride in us for being true to ourselves and appreciating the courage that lies within us to do whatever we dream to do. She cheerleads and prays with confidence over my life at the same time, and I’ve always felt a deep sense of gratitude for having her as a mom. I’ve watched her prevail over so many obstacles, never once complaining about life or the deficiencies that sometimes come with it. This has given me so much appreciation for what I have and a passion to help others succeed. She deserves all the credit for whatever I’ve been able to achieve at this point in my life – and I think that’s a lot.
