We had the good fortune of connecting with La’Mar Walker and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi La’Mar, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I grew tired of relinquishing control of my life to others. At every turn, my financial affairs were managed by someone else, and I became frustrated with being undervalued and not being paid what I was worth. In some workplaces, profit trumped everything, leading to a revolving door, and stifling my ability to fully utilize my skills to make a meaningful impact. The stress of the corporate world took a toll on my health, leaving me physically and emotionally drained and sick due to the stress.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
After 18 years of practicing therapy, I decided to come off the couch and into the community with increasing more public speaking and training. I shifted from just doing counseling to more public speaking and corporate training aimed at helping entrepreneurs and executives maintain balance within their personal and professional life. What sets me apart from others is that I am trained and experiences within the corporate world. I’m proud on working on my upcoming book and excited to collaborate with other coaches, therapists, and trainers. The shift was easy because in doing counseling I am already educating people and I have already taught on the graduate level and have previous experience in public speaking. The lessons I have learned is to stay balanced and maintain it, making sure you are pouring into those who are pouring into you, and there is power in positivity. I want people to know that I have a lot of knowledge and information but much of it is life experience. I went from an underachiever to an overachiever.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would take them to Ponce City Market, then end up at Little Five Points for the Bohemian experience, a little marketing at the Atlanta Commerce Club, and for dinner a nice lounge with a VIP booth or a patio cigar bar. One of the things I like to do is skating and some of the night life downtown Atlanta.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My mother for my spiritual development. My close family, friends, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., Prince Hall Masonic Organization, and Counseling Brothers of Atlanta.
