We had the good fortune of connecting with LaKita Steele and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi LaKita, do you have some perspective or insight you can share with us on the question of when someone should give up versus when they should keep going?

I believe at some point in everyone’s life, we’ve contemplated on giving up on something. Life often tests us and it’s during those challenging times our true strength emerges. My commitment to keep moving forward, even when faced with defeat, is commendable. “It’s got to get worse before it gets better.” This displays growth and transformation. Sometimes, the darkest hours pave the way for brighter days. When I feel like giving up, it’s essential to remember the impact I have on others—the inspiration I provide, the encouragement I offer, and the example I set.

Of course, I personally thought of giving up many times when I felt defeated, but I was taught to keep faith and not doubt God. I have a lot people who’ve told me that I’m an inspiration to them. My journey—from being a dope mom to pursuing my doctorate and helping others—is a testament to my strength of will. By refusing to hustle backward and choosing not to disappoint those who look up to me, I embody resilience and determination.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?

Who is La Femme LaKita?

A Pitbull in a skirt from Inwood, Long Island New York… not the Inwood in Manhattan. The driven firecracker with a big heart.

I’m a single mom (Yes that is a job)! Whether you have help or not you still have to figure it out and make it happen. Growing up, I learned how to make a dollar out of fifteen cents and I applied it to motherhood. Nas said “Turnin’ nothing into something’ is God work and you get nothin’ without struggle and hard work”.

I’m a Doctoral Candidate. When my grandmother passed away in January 2021, I felt lifeless. I wanted to continue to make her proud. On New Year’s Eve of 2021, I decided to enroll in school for my doctorate in Human Services with a specialization in Leadership and Organizational Management. My grandmother always said I was good at helping people because my services came from my heart. Today, I have three phases left to complete.

I’m a Board director at Mobility Works., a nonprofit organization that help low-income families move from low opportunity areas to higher opportunity areas with diverse communities. I am also a part of the Governance Committee at Mobility Works and the Program Coordinating Committee at Community Development (CDLI). In addition, I’m a member of the National Low Income Housing Coalition (NLIHC).

I’m a Public Speaker and Community Advocate serving Long Island and Queens New York, guiding people through the complexities of housing options, ensuring they find safe and suitable homes. In addition, connecting people with essential services and resources.

I want to be the staple in my community, bridging gaps and sharing knowledge about available resources. I hope my dedication and hard work makes an impact on countless lives.

My big heart got me where I am today. Anyone I’ve helped, I’ve helped because I wanted to, I’ve never asked for anything in return. It’s easy doing a job when you actually love doing it. However, I’ve had trials that I’ve faced in life that have discouraged me and affected me mentally. It’s nothing but God and prayer that keeps me going.

What I want the world to know about my brand is that I am far from perfect. I turn obstacles into possibles every day. You will always meet a person that will make you a better version of yourself. I met La Femme, my alter ego.… which means “The Woman” in French. The life struggles I’ve faced made me the woman I am today. La Femme made LaKita the better version of herself. That’s how I found myself, that’s how
La Femme LaKita was born.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well if a friend would come up for a week right now, I wouldn’t be the best hostess because of the doctoral program I’m in. However, a week with me would probably consist of getting a facial with Glow By CeeCee, dinner on Long Island at Café Baci or DaNicola. I may head to Jue Lan in Manhattan. I love going to the movies, bowling and museums such as the MOMA, and museum of ice cream. If there is an exhibit being showcased at the Brooklyn Public Library or Brooklyn Museum, I’d definitely take my friend there. On the weekends we’d go to a brunch in the city that has lit music and good vibes like Angels of Harlem, Soho Park or stay local in Long Island and go to Nuvo Kitchen (NK).

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?

God, your unwavering faith is a beacon of light every day that I open my eyes.

My Grandmother, Beulah Royal who was my best friend, a pillar of strength, she instilled resilience in my sisters and I. Your legacy lives on through your spirit.

My Mother, Theresa Royal was also my best friend and guide, she taught me to reach for the stars and never settle. Your wisdom echoes in my choices.

My Father, Joe Steele your hustle became my own. Your determination fueled my drive to succeed.

Stacey Spikes, my OG best friend, you were my encourager who nudged me toward my education. You believing in me made a difference.

Keya Carter, my PR Princess, you always showered me with metaphorical flowers. Your support uplifted me so much.

May you angels continue to guide and cover me.

My sons, Kashawn, Keaton and Karson you’re my lifeblood, my reason to persevere. You inspire me daily.

My maternal sisters, LaTasha and Nicole, thank you for being my sons back up moms and being my riders.

To the rest of Family and Friends you all are my village, my safety net. Your constant love and encouragement lift me.

Nas (My Favorite Rapper), your lyrics have been my anthem, my motivation since my freshman year of High School. Through your artistry, I find strength. Every month I write on post-its lyrics quoted from your songs as motivation and post them on my mirror.

Te’Kima Anthony Bey (My Mentor), you’re an incredible human being who shapes my path. The world needs more people like you. I aspire to be like you.

Myself, I taught myself that you don’t need to stand out in order to be OUTSTANDING!
