We had the good fortune of connecting with Kendra Palmer and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kendra, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
My passion is what makes me successful. I turned my passion into my career. I thrive off the excitement of what I can do next. Coming from the small town I’m from “Nashville Ga, (yes there is an Nashville Ga lol) people don’t expect you to do much or to thrive in any way. When I had my first son I promised him as a newborn that he would not have to grow up in a town with no possibility of expanding his dreams and capabilities . Not saying you can succeed in my town but the possibilities of growing is better in a bigger city with more opportunities. I knew I had to work hard to leave Georgia and get my brand established in South Carolina and even though I took a break when I moved from GA to SC. I worked hard and fought a lot of battles to get here and there is no turning back. My children having the opportunity to be their own boss and the choice to work for someone or not when they grow up is my motivation .Breaking the generational curses that has hindered so many black women in my family is why I strive so hard to get bigger and better. I knew failure was not an option!

What should our readers know about your business?
I started braiding and doing protective styles when I was young, (Age 12). This journey was not easy and i took a lot of losses and breaks. My aunt (Mary Ann-RIP) was my idol when it came to hair styling. My family consisted of hair braiders and stylist so I believe I was destined for this.

I moved from Georgia to South Carolina and took an 12 year break from braiding. I knew there was not an job that would fit around my family schedule. ( I’m the mother that will quit an job if it interferes with my childrens ability to wonder if I’ll have time for them.)

Even after an 12 year break I got back into braiding as if I never stopped. My body, mind and soul knew this is where I was destined to be. I started accepting clients in my living room before I transitioned into my home
Studio. My work spoke for himself and my name spread throughout the upstate.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would definitely have to take my friends downtown to visit the local restaurants ( Jamaican Mi Irie) and nightlife. We’d definitely do an photoshoot with Official Rodney Sullivan because he would capture all our unforgettable moments and one thing me and my friends love to do is laugh, so catching those moments on camera would be unforgettable . Breakfast at Gray Moon (Black owned business in South Carolina for the pancakes and collard greens is a must. Maybe visit Vibez Lounge to enjoy some hookah because my friend Patricia loves a good hookah bar and so do I. We’d definitely have to visit the sunflower field because my best friend Yolanda (Sunshine) loves sunflowers and I know doing the maze at the sunflower field would make her day. We’d definitely have to end that trip with a visit to Charlotte for one last turn up! Being as we all live in different states ( Patricia is in NJ, Yolanda is in GA and myself in SC) it’s hard for us to get together so whatever we’d do would be live and turnt up!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
God, Family (Jamil Sr, Jaylen, Jamil Jr., Jy’rah, Josiah, Jayceon and Jayde) and friends. Big Shouts to my Mom & Dad (Joann & Lee) because without them I wouldn’t be here today. My best friends Tricia and Sunshine because they push me when I’m ready to give up. Last but not least my CLIENTS , because baby yall are rocking with “BraidsbykendraP” and I’m forever grateful and thankful for trusting me to adjust your crown time and time again. Each and every client make this journey worth wild. I love you all dearly.
