We had the good fortune of connecting with Lady Kay and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lady Kay, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
When I first started Curvy Goddess back in 2016, it was for money. I had no clue what I was doing lol. I was just selling lip gloss as a hustle. I eventually faded away from it to pursue the American Dream (good career with benefits, house, etc.) but I wasn’t happy, and in 2020 I had a mental breakdown. With therapy, I realized that I didn’t love myself or knew who I was. I spent so much time giving my all to others, I had nothing left for myself. I wasn’t in love with the women in the mirror. And that’s when I started my self love journey. I started figuring out who I was. My likes and dislikes, and I realized I loved dressing up. I like expressing my self through different patterns, and trendy pieces. But it was hard to find cute cloths in my size. Yes plus size inclusion was on the rise, but only for those with flat stomachs and wide hips. So I created Curvy Goddess. I place where you can see yourself when your shopping. A place where we honor self love, and inner happiness. I want you to see the inner Goddess, no matter your shape or size. Your beautiful, so let it shine bright! I created a place where you can get a signature look for your signature curve.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Curvy Goddess is a boutique dedicated to plus size women, and we sell self love through fashion. When I started my self love journey I started doing things that made me happy, and I discovered dressing up makes me feel so sexy, and powerful. The feeling I get when I look good from head to toe, walking my walk and talking my talk, is so exuberating. When I get fine you can’t tell me NUTTIN ok! Then I realized, I wanted all plus size females to feel like this. Powerful, confident, and sassy. I want you to be able to look at your insecurities and embrace them wholeheartedly because you are beautiful beyond your “imperfections.” And even though plus size inclusion is on the rise, it still seems that only a few of us are deemed “sexy” in society’s eyes. But, all of us are alluring in our own unique ways. Whether you have a fupa, flat butt, or auntie arms you’re GORGEOUS and I wanted a place that reminded women of that. So in 2022 I relaunched Curvy Goddess, a place where curvy women can shop and see themselves while they are shopping. I want the Goddesses who visit my store to love themselves fully, and to know that they are not alone. I want them to know that they are loved just like anyone else. I created a space where plus size women can come and get a signature look for their signature curve.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Ouu… Ok so ya’ll KNOW Charleston, SC is known for some GREAT cooking. Our first stop is definitely food. I’m not vegan, but I love vegan food (don’t judge me) and Vined is first on the list. They have the best Vings (vegan wings) in the City. And lets not skip the sweet potatoes fries…mmm..m..m..m. We are also known for the plantations in the area. Now I’m not gone lie, I’m not very big on planation weddings and events due to history, but I like to visit them to learn more about our history. Magnolia plantation has a tour where you can look inside the cabins where are ancestors lived. You get to see first hand what type of conditions they had to ender so that we could be where we are today. To me, it’s an emotional experience. After the tour, you get to look around and see wildlife, and the beautiful scenery of different flowers, and you can sit by the Ashley River and enjoy the sounds of the water. Then we go to Folly Beach, stop by the Pineapple Hut for some delicious ice-cream in a pineapple, then enjoy the moonlight on the beach.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My mother. She’s been supportive of me the entire time. She’s been with me in my darkest hour. And my daughter Lilo. She’s had to sacrifice time so that I could do what I need to do to get myself together. That sacrifice will not go wasted.
