We had the good fortune of connecting with Labrena Coleman and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Labrena, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I was a high school teacher for three years and I saw a need for help amongst the adolescence. Which led me to start a nonprofit organization called Her Movement which is a youth mentoring program. The services are for teenagers between the ages of 13 -24. The mentor will provide services for the mentee every year until the mentee ages out of the program. Mentor services are offered in a group setting and require the teens to volunteer, fundraise, maintain a C average in school, and attend monthly empowerment meetings.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
It has not been a smooth road on this journey. I started two businesses not knowing any information about nonprofits or LLCs. I begin the companies because I saw there was a need and learned how to operate the business along the way. For example, a non profit is not operated the same way as you would operate an LLC. There will be times others may doubts your dreams and ideas, but you have to stay focused and determined to complete your mission. Secondly, what sets me apart from others my passion and years in the field as a social worker. I have experience with several populations; mental health disorders, adolescence, career sources, parenting skills, and much more.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Takin a trip to a self care retreat would be their perfect get away. Going on vacation with great people and relaxing is a true place of peace. That may include meditation, journaling, sleeping, spa, and much more. Eat at upscale restaurants and wineries. I enjoy the nature and quality time when going on vacations.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The volunteers, interns, members, and parents make a difference in the organization. As the founder, I could not have done it without them. I want to thank all of HER MOVEMENT supporters.
