We had the good fortune of connecting with L.A. Wade and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi L.A., is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
I would say that the most important factor behind my success is my authentic and transparent approach in storytelling, whether through my books, films, or personal brand. Authenticity tends to resonate with audiences and builds a genuine connection.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My art is a multifaceted expression rooted in storytelling through literature and film. What sets me apart is the intersection of authenticity, vulnerability, and a commitment to advocacy, particularly in mental health and community empowerment. I take pride in creating narratives that resonate on a deep, emotional level, challenging societal norms and fostering open dialogue.
My professional journey has been a dynamic evolution. Early on, I confronted the challenge of finding individuals who shared my dedication to the vision. Despite facing financial vulnerability during various stages of my career, where I invested a significant amount of my own money, I navigated these hurdles by leveraging resilience and an innate ability to be resourceful.
The path to where I am today has been far from easy, marked by the continual pursuit of my artistic vision amidst financial constraints and the need for unwavering self-belief. Overcoming these challenges required a willingness to adapt to evolving circumstances, ensuring that setbacks became opportunities for growth and innovation. This journey has ingrained in me the importance of tenacity and the ability to creatively navigate obstacles.
Each challenge encountered has served as a valuable lesson. The difficulties in adjusting to isolation and alienation arose from burning many bridges in my search for aligned collaborators. This experience underscored the significance of building a supportive network and the power of collective creativity. Financial vulnerability emphasized the need for strategic financial planning and resource allocation.
In essence, my professional journey is a narrative of overcoming obstacles through a combination of resilience, adaptability, and resourcefulness. It is a story that underscores the transformative power of dedication to one’s vision, even in the face of financial challenges, and the ongoing commitment to creating impactful and authentic art.
The lessons learned along the way are invaluable. I discovered the power of embracing vulnerability in my storytelling, allowing for genuine connections with audiences. I’ve also realized the importance of collaboration and the strength derived from a supportive community.
What I want the world to know about me and my brand is the dedication to using art as a tool for positive change. Whether through books, films, or advocacy, I aspire to make a meaningful impact. My story is one of perseverance, self-discovery, and a commitment to empowering others through the transformative potential of storytelling. This is what I am most proud of and I invite the world to join me on this journey, where authenticity, empathy, and creativity converge to create impactful narratives that resonate universally.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
“Well, I am from Toronto, Canada, so if my friend was coming here for a week, our itinerary would be nothing short of an adventure through the vibrant facets of this city. We’d kick off the week with a scenic drive, passing by iconic landmarks that define Toronto’s rich history and culture.
Given my penchant for diverse culinary experiences, our dining escapades would commence at Boukan Restaurant, a community-centered haven for Haitian cuisine. The gastronomic journey would continue with stops at Chubby’s and Miss Likklemore’s, two of my absolute favorite Jamaican food spots in the city.
Timing is crucial, and I’d insist they visit during the summer – Toronto summers are truly unparalleled. We’d immerse ourselves in the energy of street festivals influenced by various cultures, reveling in the amalgamation of music, art, and delectable food. A highlight would undoubtedly be catching a Toronto Blue Jays game, indulging in the excitement of my favorite sport. If they arrived in late fall, a Toronto Raptors game would be on the agenda.
Two festivals that hold a special place in my heart are Caribana (Toronto Caribbean Carnival) and Afrofest. These summer celebrations epitomize the grandeur of cultural heritage on a massive scale, a time when my pride for the city peaks, and the enjoyment knows no bounds.
As the week unfolds, we’d culminate our journey with a leisurely stroll and perhaps a play at the Distillery District, soaking in the artistic ambiance at Soul Pepper Theatre. It would be a bittersweet farewell, with an open invitation for them to return and discover even more of the city’s hidden gems.”
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to Carlos Anthony, whose unwavering support, mentorship, and belief in my potential were pivotal in the creation of my book series and the production of the proof of concept for ‘Thirsty AF: The Adventures of a Recovering Sex Addict.’ His dedication, resources, and the confidence he instilled in me served as a catalyst, providing the inspiration and motivation to not only start but also successfully complete the goals we set during his mentorship. Carlos Anthony’s encouragement and cheering on played a crucial role in the journey, shaping the trajectory of my creative endeavors. This shoutout is a sincere acknowledgment of his invaluable contributions that have profoundly impacted my story and success.
