We had the good fortune of connecting with Kywanda Reed and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kywanda, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I’ve worked in Healthcare for over 19 years as a Medical Biller/ Business Office Manager and Medicaid Specialist for Long Term Care Facilities. During the Covid pandemic In the single month of March 2020, healthcare employment dropped by 1.5 million jobs, Hospitals and LTC’s nationwide suffered staffing shortages and Resident was Socially Isolated which caused depression, anxiety, and High Blood Pressure for Patients and the Staff. In 2021 I thought to myself what can I do to help my community. I became an CNA and started helping on the floor particularly in Memory care. While working in Memory care I noticed the the Patient wasn’t interested in the activities so I created activities individualized to the Patients. Seeing the impact I was making on the patient health by simply keeping their bodies moving pushed me to establish LeKar Homecare and Activity Companion service.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?

My Business of course .

Lekar Homecare & Activity Companion Services-provides a caring community with the latest in interactive therapies, and structured daily activities to provide meaningful purpose to those with Mental Disabilities, Alzheimer’s and Dementia. Our Team focus solely on the individuals need verses the need of the diagnoses. We hold weekly QA meetings with our clinical Team to assure the Resident needs are being met and that keeps me pretty busy.

What are you most proud of?

I’m most proud of creating a platform that promote empathy and empowerment for the disability community. Our ultimate goal is to help create a more inclusive society where those with physical and intellectual challenges are treated with respect, and their needs are understood and accommodated.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to give a special shout to my boys LeMarvin and Karsen Harris for sharing me with the community. I alsowould like to shout out to my family and friends who made this journey possible. Thank you all!!
