We had the good fortune of connecting with Kylon Haugabook and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kylon, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Our business officially started at the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic. We saw that black students especially were falling further behind their peers due to at home schooling. We figured we have the knowledge so lets help those less fortunate than us. Since then we’ve had so many students and parents tell us we’re the first black educators they had an they show improvement so we know we’re doing the right thing.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
The biggest thing that separates us in my opinion is pricing. We are already cheaper than many other tutoring services but we also offer free sessions for all new students. We realize our main customer base is black people and when it comes to finances we typically need help. We are glad we can the help people need.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My wife and I have started hanging out in Grant Park. There is a whiskey bar called Grant Park Social we enjoy. There is another bar based on James Bond we like called Vesper. Beyond that I’d take them to the civil rights museum and ebenezer baptist church. We’d definitely carve out time to get wings and probably visit many of the beautiful parks in the city.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to shoutout our students and parents. Before we begin our sessions we let parents and students know that we are rigorous. We don’t just expect them to join sessions we also expect them to work outside of sessions. We send homework home and our students consistently complete it. They are doing extra work aside from what we and their teachers assign. I think thats why so many of our students are successful.
