Meet Kyla White | Company Creator

We had the good fortune of connecting with Kyla White and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kyla, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
All I remember thinking was “I can’t do this anymore”. I was so tired of working for the company I was with and it became obvious they didn’t care about me or the other employees. I decided it was time to venture out on my own and start something I could be proud of.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I love my work, it’s really a passion of mine to provide candles that give a feeling of kinship to our customers. That’s kind of what makes me different, that and the fact that all our candles are made from all natural soy wax.
This journey hasn’t been easy at all. There have been constant ups and downs but God has seen me through it all. The sales challenges, shortage of supplies, lack of exposure, I’ve been through it all but I’ll tell what, I’m proud of myself and glad that if I have to go through hurdles, it’s for my own company.
You have to keep God first, stay consistent, paying attention to your customers and remember at the end of the day, you’re still a person, I often forgot how important my own mental health was and how much I needed rest. Yes, customer satisfaction is very important but if you run yourself into the ground, who will keep your business running? Never sell yourself short, don’t doubt yourself and know that you’re worthy of your success and happiness.
Noir Candles is “For the Culture” and always will be.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m from the city (Detroit) so there are a lot of places to see.
If you want inexpensive food, I’d go to “Andrew’s On The Corner” close to the river walk. You could give “They Say” a try too, they’re only down the street and their wings and turkey chops are delicious.
The river walk is a great place to have a nice outdoor experience next to the water and if you look across the river, you can see straight into Canada.
If you want to stay downtown, “Basement Burger Bar” is good too. You can create your own burger and they have milkshakes! I love it. From there you can walk around and see some of our famous theatres and Comerica Park.
Oooh, and make sure you get on the People Mover, its fun and it only costs a few quarters. Go take pictures in front of Joe Louis’ fist, visit DIA and the Charles H. Wright Museum. You absolutely have to visit the Eastern Market while you’re here.
In Corktown there’s a place with great food called “Bobcat Bonnies” love it and they have vegan options.
There’s a great restaurant on every corner in Mexican Town so there’s no worries there.
I’ve heard the corn beef at “Conant Street Grill” (Eastside) is amazing and the egusi soup at “Fork in Nigeria” (Westside) food truck is to die for and food at “Yoshi Hibachi Grille” (Westside) is equally amazing.
To be honest, you just can’t go wrong when it comes to food in Detroit.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have to thank God, of course, it was through his guidance that I was able to make such a huge leap of faith. My family and friends were a huge help, as well. Always supporting me and making sure I’m not too hard on myself. Thank God for them.
