We had the good fortune of connecting with Kyante’ Brumfield and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kyante’, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Since I was 6 years old, I have had dreams of being a singer-songwriter/performer. My thought process of being an independent artist stemmed from experience in theatre and vocal training in high school and college and just coming alive on stage. I started performing locally back in 2016. Moving from the small town of Houma, LA to the city of New Orleans really enhanced my motivation and ambition to create music and perform. Seeing other artists such as myself perform at jazz bars, festivals, open mics, etc. really fueled my fire to want to take my music career further and in 2017, I recorded my first studio track. After recording my first track, I felt so liberated and knew this is the pathway I should be venturing. My first single “TicTock” received so much positive feedback and my fan base started to grow.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Singing and performing are my passions. I come alive on stage! I think what sets me apart from the average RnB singer is my experience as a vocalist. During my high school and college career, music was an essential aspect of my life. I participated in theatre, school, state, and honor choirs until I graduated high school and went on to college. College is where music became a way of life for me. Being that I was a vocal performance major, I ate, breathed, and LIVED music. What makes me unique and not your average recording artist is that I can sing in at least 4 different languages (German, Latin, French, and English), am classically trained, can read music, and have participated (sang and acted) in over 10 musicals. I can truly say college is where I sprouted from a catepillar into a musical butterfly. Being that I was diagnoased with dyslexia at an early age, reading music and playing an instrument such as the piano wasn’t easy for me. To overcome this challenge, I would dedicate at least 2-3 hours everyday practicing the piano. What I experienced in college created a foundation for the artist I am today. I want the world to know that my voice reflects my music; authentic and raw. My music is derived from my emotions and situations I’ve been through and presently go through. My latest EP, Aquarius SZN, embodies this. My song “Wake Up” is dedicated to my 2 year-old son, Coren, and just everyday life. My song “DND” is written about a past “sneaky link” and the traumas that women go through who have “daddy issues” or simply never even knew who their father was. “Cloud 9” is dedicated to black love. “Crown” expresses self-love, finding yourself, and glowing up. I want to let all the independent artists out there know that I know it isn’t an easy road but to keep going and not get discouraged. “Reach for the stars, so if you fall, you’ll land on a cloud.” -Kanye West
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I live in the best city ever; New Orleans, LA. Our culture is unmatched and like no other. I’m pretty sure if my friend came to visit out of town, they wouldn’t want to leave. An ideal night for me in the city would be to catch some live music, go dancing at a Reggae Club, chill and vibe at a hookah lounge, or munch out at a dope seafood restaurant. My favorite types of food are seafood and Hibachi. I love trying out new places to eat and kind of consider myself a foodie and New Orleans is def the place for that! Right now, its festival season and the city is hot! I’ve been fortunate enough to have the opportunity to perform at a couple of events during this liberating time for us all!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to shout out my family and my boyfriend who have been my support system in every way imaginable. I would also like to shout out to my team, Da Pekuliar Onez (DPO), Anu Da Sun, and Angel da Don; we are an all-female music group giving you authentic RnB, Neo-soul, and Hip-hop vibes.
