We had the good fortune of connecting with Kurtis Dejon’ and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kurtis, why did you pursue a creative career?
Its never fun feeling like you are trapped in a box, or you know – that cycle that we are accustomed to. Never being able to express who you are, what actually goes on in your mind, and how you feel, especially when it comes to what makes you – You!
I know this may be common but like most I never felt like I belonged, and I didn’t want to just do what everybody else did growing up just fit in. I chose to do things that made me feel like I was ALIVE, like I was LIVING no matter how scared I was of judgement. I wanted to feel in control of my own life, it just happened to blossom into something that I never expected.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Being an actor has many layers; many may think it’s easy but once you’re engulfed in it and start to pull back the layers of what it represents – fully, you began to recognize the complex nature of “it takes 20 years” and to be great it never ends.
My life was never a silver spoon, but I was optimistic. I was and still am an empathetic adventurous soul. A skinny nerd from Indiana- born in the 90s with trauma and a religious background that I had to relearn and reshape to evolve into the man I am today, and I’m still learning about myself and overcoming many challenges that kept me afraid and unaware of my purpose. Theres still lessons to learn but hey I’m on my way.

This journey offers the appreciation of all walks of life. Creating and telling stories that help guide people to love, redemption, laughter, hope, joy is something that can’t even be described, but to live in it with them and recognize the emotion and placing yourself in a world beyond yours is so freeing to me. Not everyone is called to do it but I’m doing, and I respect it and honor it with everything in me and I can’t wait to see what’s to come.

I thought I wanted greatness. Maybe I wanted the easy route so I can live my life, but now I just want to be relatable! I’m great just by being the man GOD created me to be. I’m looking beyond now, I’m on that bringing fun & uniqueness in music, dressing & modeling how they want in all sizes, who’s comedy gives you: Martin, Boondocks, The Bernie Show, Thats so Raven, Lexitelevision, Kid Fury, Living Single, Kevonstage. Thats what I’m on. Thats me!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well, Shoot! Um so initially what would happen is food! Theres this spot in West Midtown called K POT that I would take them to. I like to walk to I would definitely hit Piedmont Park next to walk the food off, stop at Willys while we walk and grab a Margarita lol if were in the mood. I’m spontaneous so I’m not good with itineraries but well discuss a few things I like or somethings we’ve always wanted to do like IFLY, Braves game, Zip Lining, Andretti’s, Escape Rooms, Theres this place called Rage Room and if you don’t know the title speaks for itself.

In Atlanta there’s always something to do, but there’s places like Impulse and Backstage where you do Karaoke which is always fun for me and my friends. I can’t forget Sandbox VR either location has great service so that’s a must. Typically, i throw a bunch of places out and we could line them up as we go.

Most times I know they would like to hit the infamous places like OLG, Juicy Crab, Yard House, Boogaloo, JJs, and all the malls, to eat and shop, but during the nighttime life I like to drive around Edgewood, Ponce City Market, Midtown, Buckhead, Marietta and find bars and lounges even I have never been to just to try them out to have a new experience not only for them but myself as well.

Other than that, I would just walk and drive to find new people, places, and things. Gotta stay adventurous!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Shout out to GOD, he/she/spirit whom ever he is to you Praise for just EVERYTHING.
Also, to my mom Schadise for being my biggest supporter, there’s so many. It kind of feels like I’m giving my Emmy speech already but my family, my close friends who probably always felt like I wasn’t always a good friend, but they deserve it because they are always and to this day still lookout for me. Lastly to all of my Acting Coaches for seeing my potential and pushing me to go beyond my limits.
