We had the good fortune of connecting with Krystel Hurd and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Krystel, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
What is work life balance? I’m grinding right now! I feel like this is my chance to be all in, so I’ve been giving it 150%!

You really have to do what you have to do right now, so you can do what you want to do later.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Deep Rootz Hair Care is a natural, luxury hair care line that is dedicated to scalp health and hair growth. I started my business in July 2020 in Slidell, Louisiana, and by December 2020, I was already in one beauty supply store. I was so excited to be in a brick-and-mortar store, but I totally underestimated the financial commitment that it takes to successfully run a business. I ended up taking a year off to focus on building up the resources that I needed to buy my inventory and actually be able to sustain my company. In that year, I worked double time! I paid off $40k in credit card debt in 6 months, saved a down payment for a new home, and relocated to Alabama. Now, that it’s 2022, I have re-launched with a solid plan, and I’m excited to announce that shortly after re-launch, my business was 1 of 50 that was selected to be a Vendor at The World Games 2020!! This is a life-changing opportunity, and I’m ready to be a part of this historical event!

Getting to this point hasn’t been easy at all. I often think back to 2007 when I left home to go to college. I left with $20 to my name. Literally $20 and a few snacks. I was terrified, but I have always been a go-getter. Only having $20 may have stopped a lot of people from taking that jump, but I took it, and turned that $20 into $239k last year! If I can do it, anyone can. I don’t think there are enough buckets around to hold the tears I cried along the way, but I pushed through the rough patch. I had to pray against my own fears and doubts, and constantly tell myself that I have a purpose. My business has a purpose, and that I have this vision for a reason.

The biggest lesson that I’ve learned along the way is that marketing is everything. You can have the best product in the world, but if it’s not in front of your target market, it won’t sell. That is an expensive lesson to learn, so take it from me. Invest in a good marketing campaign. Eat, sleep, and breathe marketing if you plan to do it yourself.

I really want people to know that it is possible to make it to where you want to be. While I’m still in the early stages of business, I am thinking and moving as if my brand is already in Walmart and Target. I have invested so much time and energy into providing products that are paraben and sulfate free, and that make our hair easier to manage. Deep Rootz Hair Care is definitely on the way up!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’ve only been to Atlanta a few times, so we’d probably have to hop on Tiktok and find the hottest places to visit (and make content as we go).

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to send a shoutout to my brother, Patrick Hurd. He’s been my mentor and biggest supporter through all of my endeavors. When I feel like quitting, he’s there to remind me that I said I was going to make it! We all need that extra push, and I’m grateful for him.
