We had the good fortune of connecting with Kristy Fleming-Smith and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kristy, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Everyone wants a job or career that is rewarding and enjoyable. The kind of career that doesn’t feel like work at all. We all search for purpose. It is a blessing to recognize that my purpose and my career interests align. The many friends and family who have asked for my assistance over the years helped me to take notice of my skill. I have taken steps to further sharpen that skill so that I can market it to the public. My brow business was started from my natural talent and my desire to help others to enhance their beauty.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
In 2018, I decided to make my brow business professional. Prior to then, I was shaping brows, doing make up, and giving out tips for free. I took several classes from some the top brow trainers in the Atlanta area to learn microblading, microshading, and brow tinting. I learned that there are some really great trainers in this industry. I also learned there were individuals who were just great at putting up a front in order to take your money. I took a one-on-one class from a well known trainer who was very tight lipped about how to actually run the business. She also neglected to relay any of the things needed to set yourself up for success in this industry. Getting information from her was like pulling teeth, despite the thousands I had paid her. Some people feel that if you give to much information, someone else might try to take their spot. This was a big lesson for me. In this moment I knew that when I started training others, I would always be forthcoming with my trainees. These is enough room for everyone’s talent. It made me work harder to figure out how to run a successful business on my own. I purchased all the supplies needed. and began to practice on family and friends. This help me to develop and sharpen my skill. I created the LLC, got a logo, and got trademarked. I started taking paying clients. I learned that people trusted me and were comfortable with me because of my professional background as a registered nurse. I also drew people in with my own appearance. My defined brows were always eye catching. Things began to go great for me. My name was getting around by word and mouth and all of my beautiful clients provided a walking billboard. Then COVID came, I closed my business for over two years. People were still calling and asking for services after being closed for so long. I decided it was time to go back and get things moving. There was no need to continue to wait, COVID risks are not leaving us anytime soon. I jumped back in head first and got to work reviving my business. I have had a return of some old clients and gotten a some new. I am looking forward to continuing with my passion and purpose through all of the ups and downs of business.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
While you are visiting Atlanta you should check out a Hawks game at State Farm Arena. Check out The Battery for shopping, food, and to catch a Braves game. Don’t forget to walk around Atlantic Station for more shopping, activities, movies, and food. Go to Anns Snack Bar for a great home town burger. Go to ABC (Atlanta Breakfast Club) for great breakfast, be prepared for a long line!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to dedicate my Shoutout to my husband Dermaine Smith. He has been my rock, my encourager, and my biggest support in all endeavors. He is truely my number one fan, and he deserves all the flowers.
