We had the good fortune of connecting with Kristi Gevara and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kristi, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I have always absolutely always loved my industry and I have guard ideas of how things should be ran and what to sell and wkat type of stylist I want wowing for and with me. That is the main reason I wanted to start my own business. It was and still is a professional yet great experience wiry friendliness and feeling right at home !

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a hairstylist. This is my 30 th year of being in this profession and working behind the chair . I open my first salon when I was 21. It was in my hometown and I loved it and learned a lot . I eventually moved off. I ended up in San Antonio and starting working at Cactuf Flower in the hill country. After working there for 9 years, the opportunity came up for me to buy it. I then owned it for 8 years. I absolutely loved every minute of it. I always took my time to find the right fit if stylist to work there. We were always very professional but also very friendly and had a great time together. It was a very welcoming salon. For three years in a row I received #1 salon . We were always so busy, I was very blessed. Two years ago , the state came in and after inspections of the area , they found I needed a new septic system for hair color chemicals. I had to move locations. So it’s been a year now , I chose not to reopen a new location , my life had gone in a different direction. I now lease a salon suite and it’s still called Cactus Flower. My clientele has remained with me. They travel from Spring Branch to New Braunfels , just 20 minutes away. During those years , I mentored many young stylist who has since become very successful.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
New Braunfels is such an amazing fun town. I would take them first to Gruene . Have many restaurants to choose from. The Gristmill is right on the river with live music located to to Gruene Hall, which is the oldest dance Hall in Texas that still open . Then we could walk around Gruene and check out some unique boutiques. If it was summer time , one day we would float down the river and take a cooler with us and enjoy the sun and day . Then one day we would go to downtown New Braunfels and walk around and check out many hot spots that have live music and in the evenings if it was chilly, we’d go to Pour Haus and sit by a fire while listening to music . New Braunfels also has a beautiful park that the river goes through and we would walk / hike around that area !

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I learned so much from the previous owner of the salon I worked at and bought it from, her name is Barbara Sparkman. She always had high standards. She taught me to always be professional yet personable. Dress the part whether you are at work or just out running errands.
