We had the good fortune of connecting with Kopper Williams and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kopper, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?

I’m not sure that I pursued it more like it found me. I’ve always worked in corporate America and had to wear the blue pant suit or the dress clothes every day. I wasn’t allowed to have crazy colored hair and really expressed myself. After having my son, it was such a hard balance going back to work being a new young mom and not having the leverage that I needed to really bond with him as an infant.  I had to send him to day care immediately at four months because I was still a working mom. Flexibility and balancing new mom duties was a constant uphill battle and I decided to make a change. Fast forward four  years, I decided that I was going to move forward with cosmetology school. With the support and help of my family I worked a full job and went to school from 6 PM to 11 o’clock at night. My cosmetology instructor Mrs. Tawanda Ray pushed me to excel in every aspect. As a child my love for drawing, painting and fashion allowed me to be expressive and create things that were meaningful to me. My childhood art was displayed during the local Steeplechase and at the Butterfly Exhibit at Callaway Gardens. That said, art was and still is a very strong part of my life. Fast forward to today, I am now a hair color specialist, thriving in the world of art while giving clients the confidence to express themselves through hair. This world of cosmetology has allowed me to tailor my time to meet the demands of being a single mother and providing for my son.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?

I am a Master Cosmetologist in Columbus Ga specializing in hair color, extensions as well as bridal hair and makeup. I service all textures and types of hair. If it’s hair, it’s about to become a masterpiece! No one client looks like the others and I love that.

I am most proud of being a part of the inaugural class of the TRESemme Future Stylist Fund, a scholarship that was created to help aspiring black female hairstylists offset the cost of cosmetology school. This scholarship was awarded to 10 stylists across the US to provide industry exposure and career advancing opportunities to foster meaningful career growth. In addition to that, exclusive exposure through the TRESemme brand channels as well as mentorship and development.

Being selected as 1 of the 10 recipients and being able to represent Georgia was so rewarding! I even had the opportunity to be on Bravo TV’s Project Runway Season 19 Episode 11 and partake in NYFW festivities. Meeting and working with Lacy Redway was great and very educational. I really enjoyed the small intimate styling class with Lacy and Nai’Vasha Johnson alongside my TRES Sisters in addition to my one on one marketing call with Justine Marjan. It was nothing short of amazing and further reminded me that I was exactly where I was supposed to be…The Beauty Industry!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.

That’s so easy! We would eat at Jarfly or Mabellas, because the atmosphere is amazing, just like the food and drinks! Mabellas, gives you a swanky fine dining experience, while Jarfly gives you that backyard family party with all the great vibes and a really creative menu!

We would definitely go to the Friday Night Concert Series downtown on Broadway because what’s better than live music, food, drinks and amazing vibes!

So you have to check out Iron Bank Coffee and have a bomb photo op in the vault.

On Saturday morning, take a stroll down Broadway to enjoy market days and shop with local businesses and different vendors. It’s nothing like supporting small businesses and finding those one of a kind items. When you’re done there swing by Dinglewood Pharmacy for a good scramble dog made with love!

My hometown Columbus Ga, has so much to offer it’s hard to not list every favorite on my list!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?

My mom Katina, son Grayson in addtion to my amazing family and friends as well as my  Rivertown School Of Beauty family.
