We had the good fortune of connecting with Kobe Warner and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kobe, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Kids are always being asked by adults what they want to be when they grow up, and most kids don’t like that question. It didn’t bother me so much, though, because I always had an answer and that answer was always the same. “Well, I’m gonna be a pop star.” And I was dead serious. I loved performing in musical theatre my entire childhood and I could never get with the idea of a plan B. I’m 21 now, and I’ve started to flesh out different artistic avenues in life so as to make a living and also feed my soul. I signed with an agency in Atlanta to do commercial and modeling work, I started a podcast called KOBLIZZY that’s run for about 5o episodes as of late, and I write original music. I’m actually working on some new releases right now!
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My music is incredibly important to me, and I regard it with a lot of pride. When I was kid doing musical theatre, I thought I’d never be able to write songs. I really don’t know why I was so convinced, but I really was. Once I began writing, I realized how much I loved it and how good I could be at it. I love the lyrics, they’re my favorite part. They don’t even have to be complicated, of course they can be, but sometimes the simplest songs are the hardest to write. I like rapping because I have a lot to say and my flow is typically wordy. When I first started trying to write more pop records, I had a hard time at first because pop lyrics are usually less wordy. I got the hang of it eventually, but it was challenging from a writing standpoint for me at first. In the new songs I’ve been working on, I feel like I’m creating a more specific perspective because it’s kind of a pop/rap hybrid situation. I’m not saying I’m reinventing the wheel or anything, but I’ve definitely made it my own in a way that only I can.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I loveeee Slutty Vegan. That place is bomb, whether or not you eat meat. I would definitely take my friend to a drag show at MSR or X. We could hit up Cultivate for some vegan beignets! Little Five Points is such a cute spot and they have some good food and great thrift stores. Piedmont Park is gorgeous, but Metro Atlanta has some gorgeous parks that we’d for sure take a stroll though if the weather permits. We could go hang out at Ponce City Market, and see a show at the City Winery! Then we could take a nap because that was a lot of activity.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to shoutout my parents. They have truly and equivocally supported me throughout my life, and they are the number 1 fans of my art too. In fact, they have always pushed me to pursue my dreams and live a life that is centered around my gifts. I think that kind of support is unique, especially for a queer child. I’m not sure what I did to deserve them, but I am very grateful that I have them. Thank you.
