We had the good fortune of connecting with K’La Rivers and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi K’La, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Risk has been one of the greatest tools to learn more about myself. We are conditioned to associate risk with something bad on the other end of the decision. I believe with running a business, especially a business that is focused on spiritual work, I have had to heal my relationships with the idea of risk. Risks don’t have to be reckless. I believe for a long time I made that association and when I did take risks they were coming from a place of not caring about being reckless. As I have worked towards healing that relationship and realizing that risks are about intent, knowing that things can fail, yet choosing to believe in the possibility and certainty of success. This shift has granted me the ability to give grace to myself when my risk “doesn’t go as planned” or to have more faith in my ability to pivot and focus more on the end goal and less on how the journey should look. I believe risk teaches about how much faith you are willing to have in the unknown and your ability to trust yourself with whatever may come next. Even if you “fail” by taking a risk, you could still fail by doing nothing. Creating the life you desire, comes with risk. Nothing on this planet is certain. Security and certainty to an extent are an illusion. Choosing to accept that reality has led me to keep going even when things may appear to my physical eyes bleak. It was a risk to start my business during a pandemic, yet even with all the headaches, I have endured. I love what I do, I love learning from my risk, and I love that the risk I take inspires those around me to also take those risks.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I love my business. I have created an online metaphysical shop, where many of the products are beauty items that help enhance your natural abilities. Each item is crafted with a spiritual intent and with scent, skin, & purpose in mind. My idea when starting my business was to create spiritual tools for others that may be new to certain forms of spirituality, however, are aware that they desire or need energy/spiritual work. Your spiritual health and maintenance are important to the quality of life you will live.
What excites me most about my business is I am often able to see the result firsthand of the work that I am doing. People are able to come back and let me know how my products have helped them grow or how my words or guidance have given them more confidence to move forward with their plans. I am doing this out of love and a desire to serve. Any profit is a benefit.
My brand is focused on reminding you of your personal power. That you don’t have to keep telling the story from the point of view of the victim. Yes, we live in a world that has been crafted to take liberties away from us, That has conditioned us to think less of ourselves and to use outside things to validate ourselves. Yet, this doesn’t have to be the reality that you live in. I want to be proof that you can make the most of our uncomfortable circumstances, and that in order to change anything in your life, you have to change your perspective and you have to keep going on your road. As much as society has told us horror stories, horror stories that shouldn’t be stories if people lived with integrity and kindness. There are still people willing to act in love and as long as people continue to act in love, in kindness, and in integrity, the ability for change is always available. First, start with self, then community, and have faith that your love will be contagious.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
aah, Whenever I get these questions my brain always blanks if I don’t go out and experience life or if I haven’t lived in Brooklyn the majority of my whole life.
First, because I am a biased New Yorker, we would have to visit at least 2-3 NY landmarks. My favorite is Coney Island. I am a beach girl. I will always love the beach, no matter the part of the country I am in. We would then have to go to Juniors. I grew up in the Junior”s in downtown Brooklyn and I am a LOVER of dinner food. The third landmark I would take them to might be maybe the Empire state because there are a few steak houses that I love in the area that we could visit after.
If we spent the day at Coney Island, it would only be right to go to Nathan’s for hot dogs and cheese fries. We would go on a Friday Night during the summer hopefully and watch the fireworks from the Wonder Wheel. It’s the perfect summer night for me because you usually have people dancing on the boardwalk at night and there are all these carnival games.
Going to Junior’s we are followed after the movie. They recently added the Alamo Drafthouse in downtown Brooklyn. It is a dine-in movie theater and the food is delicious we would go to Junior’s after for either a Sundae or a slice of cheesecake. In my opinion, the chocolate mousse cheesecake and carrot cake cheesecake are the best. The strawberry is too sweet. Because I love this city, I would head up the block and take them to the NY Transit Museum right after, or maybe we’d go before the movie. The Transit Museum is truly one of my favorite places to go. They have a section where you can ride the train and the train cars are styled like the different decades of the transit system. Would finish the day by walking down to the Brooklyn Bridge, maybe taking a water taxi or just sitting and watching the skyline. Another area in NY where you can usually find entertainment just sitting outside.
For seeing the Empire State Building, I would do it as part of this pass that they offer to see the top of multiple famous buildings in the city, most people don’t know about it, however, it’s really good for a visit because each building by itself can get pretty pricey. As we are in the city, we would have to stop and at least see the inside of GrandCentral. It’s beauty. Most people don’t know the picture on the ceiling is also backward. It’s an astrology piece. In the city, my favorite steak houses are Keens and the Strip House. Keen’s is one of New York’s oldest steak houses and their ceiling is filled with old pipes. The Strip House is a newer steak house, however everything there is delicious and I think they make a 14-layer chocolate cake.
To round off the week, maybe go see a play. I can live or live without them. However, I would make sure to take us to Magic Jewelry to take aura photos and try some eats in china town and even head over to Little Italy for dessert.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would love to give a shoutout to my friends, they pour so much love into me. They see me in ways that most people wish to be seen. They remind me of my light and they support me unconditionally. They hold me accountable and they are patient with me. I truly believe we are nothing without our community and I know that the support and love I receive are a reflection of who I am and how I pour into others it is nice to know that my love can and will be reciprocated.
To reach a social level of success, you know what you see on TV or Instagram is nice. I truly believe people should have as much money and material things as they desire. However, I know success is in the company you keep.
If I had to credit any book to my success, I would mention the bell hook trilogy. All About Love, Salvation, and Communion. These books help to reinforce and expand my definition of love and blackness and the importance of my community. When the love is real success follows. When the intent is genuine success follows. I think it’s important to know that you set the goal post in your life. You set the image of what success and as long as you try to fit someone’s else definition you will always feel that your desires are out of reach.
