We had the good fortune of connecting with KL Vox and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi KL, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I am a risk taker. I’ve left a very monetarily secure job to chase my passions- I’ve travelled across the world to find true love. Life is way too short to live so safe. I think as people get older we lose our sense of adventure. We lose hope of our dreams and settle for average lives. Yes, people that risk it all risk a lot. Sometimes it doesn’t pay off, and you wind up in a pit. But you have to risk big to win big; and I’m a firm believer that fortune eventually favors the brave. And Im telling you, the failure of risking and not landing what you want beats the regret or wondering if you could have years later, any day of the week.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m a photographer, model, makeup artist, stylist, painter, creator, and entrepreneur. I call myself a creative chameleon because I do so much. I used to think that hindered me, and on some days it does make it difficult to focus- but overall it’s helped me. I’m very hungry for art and the world. Having many different skills means I can be placed in many experiences and things never get boring! I’m most excited about new projects I’ve started, things I’ve never ventured into before. New things are always scary and exciting, but we need that fear to stay dynamic. Fear of failure used to hold me back a lot. I’m a Capricorn and I hate not immediately being good at things. So a lot of times in the past I’d talk myself out of things, for fear of not being successful or looking stupid. But I lost that, actually this year. The pandemic offered me a lot of self reflection. I no longer fear failure. If I fail at one thing, I’ll just try another. As an artist I don’t feel like it’s ever easy finding your true calling, it’s a life long and ever changing road. The hardest part for me was setting aside friendships to focus on my self growth. When you start focusing on growth you’ll lose a lot of people. The ones that are simply happy staying put when you want to move forward. It was a hard thing for me, because I attach deep. But if you can’t pull people forward with you, they’ll end up holding you back. I am most proud about staying true to myself. Which is actually very very hard these days. We have countless advertisements and media telling us all who we should be, how we should look. We compare ourselves to the endless seemingly perfection and art of our peers on our own social media platforms. Conscious or not, it’s getting in our heads. It’s the single hardest thing to stay true to yourself or your brand. What makes you, you. And I’m not always successful at this, but I’ve found that when I am, I’m far more successful than trying to emulate something else. At the end of the day I just want to live free, and create freely. I don’t care about it being perfect- I just want to make art that makes people feel something.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If I was to entertain in Atlanta I would definitely definitely do the High Museum- it’s immense and white backdrop to amazing art is so soothing, Eight sushi for dinner they have the best sushi impeccable service and the presentation is beautiful, cocktails at The Lawrence- they have the best craft cocktails that seasonally change and are created by their mixologist bartenders, I would visit my good friend David Rams to get stories from his past with amazing photo albums, and then to some amazing smaller art galleries we have in town. If we had time I’d take them to see the cabbage town mural area for some awesome street art.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Dedicated to the many artist friends and artist partner of mine that are constantly inspiring me to grow and evolve and not settle.
