We had the good fortune of connecting with Kittwani Oscar and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kittwani, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I was born on the Caribbean island of Dominica and I grew up in a small village in the north of the island. The community I grew up in was one with a strong concept of community and an appreciation for the simplicities of life. Growing up in the Caribbean, I was deeply immersed in a culture that is colorful and energetic, which has impacted who I am as a person. As a child, I always was passionate about dancing, starting with performing praise dances at church, and I enjoyed the blissful excitement and sense of joy that music and dance can give a person.
After moving to the U.S., I obtained an associate’s degree in Physical Education followed by a Bachelor’s degree in Health and Fitness Management and a minor in Business Administration. In 2016 I launched my very own fitness dance class called KITTNESS, which incorporates dance fitness with Afro-Caribbean music, body movements, and waistline rolling to share the fun and joyous atmosphere that helped shape who I am. Today, I am now the proud owner of KITTNESS Dance Fitness Studio which is a multicultural dance fitness studio that offers a wide range of fitness routines that encourage confidence and a strong sense of community in an energetic, judgment-free atmosphere where our motto is, “we measure your smile, not your waistline.”
What should our readers know about your business?
I am the owner of KITTNESS Dance Fitness Studio. It is a multicultural Dance Fitness Studio where various genres and styles of fitness and dance are offered. This includes Afro-Caribbean Dance Fitness, MixxedFit, Cardio Kickboxing, Cardio Sculpt and more. The overall goal of my business is to promote confidence through fitness and dance in a fun, energetic, and limitless environment. Despite all the positives of owning my own small business, there were difficulties along the way and at times there are still difficulties to work through. One of the main challenges is wearing all the hats of the business in order to run the show. I assume many roles as the owner, which includes choreography, sales and marketing, accounting, video editing, and IT. Having to perform so many roles on my own can be overwhelming at times, but I have developed strategies to alleviate how daunting that can be. I’ve learned to be honest with myself about the areas in which I excel and recognize the areas where I would need to grow my abilities or seek outside help. I’ve also learned the importance of staying organized and on track as well as maintaining a healthy work-life balance.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend was in the area for a week, I would recommend going to Rum Punch Brunch, Fly Chef Restaurant if they enjoy African cuisine. I also enjoy eating at EscovitcheZ Legendary Island Cuisine, PASHA Restaurant and Bar, and Tastee Spoon. I have a sweet tooth as well, so we would pay a visit to Tiff’s Treats for some warm delicious cookies. For fun, we would visit Perimeter Mall and incorporate some workout time. They could join me as I host an outdoor class at The Atlanta Beltline, indoor classes at KITTNESS Dance Fitness Studio, followed by a nice hike on Stone Mountain to close off the week.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to give a shout out to all of the talented instructors at KITTNESS Dance Fitness Studio, my incredibly supportive family, and everyone who joins our classes online and in studio to dance without limitations.
