We had the good fortune of connecting with Kira Cummings and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kira, why did you pursue a creative career?
I pursued an artistic/creative career because it’s the one thing that I’m good at. Creating doesn’t feel like work- it’s an enjoyable process. The only time that stress plays a factor is when it comes to deadlines.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My art/woodburnings consist of portraits of well known individuals and entertainers. What sets me apart from others is that in addition to my art, I’m also a videographer, and animator.
I’m most proud of the woodburning that I did of Myrlie Evers. It is my largest woodburning to date and one of the more challenging pieces that I have done.
I got to where I am today professionally with honing my craft. It isn’t easy- I’ve had sleepless nights trying to finish up on projects. The biggest challenge for me is time management. There are times when I’m overwhelmed with projects and I just wish there were more hours in the day.
The lessons that I’ve learned along the way is that it’s ok to say ‘No’ to certain projects that don’t align with your brand.
What I want the world to know about me: Kira Cummings is a multi-medium artist adept in an array of disciplines; painting, pyrography, photography, videography, graphic design, and animation. A Fine Art graduate of Jackson State University with a Minor in Graphic Design, Cummings holds a membership in the Craftsmen’s Guild of Mississippi for pyrography. Cummings is the Creative Director for The Works where she creates video and animation for musicians, interview programs, and corporate promotions as well as producing live events.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
