We had the good fortune of connecting with Kings 4 Queens JS and Comix Strategy and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kings 4 Queens, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
JS: With work life, you are going to be tired, sleep is a premium when you are taking your goals to the next level, but I have a goal and I want to do it on my terms, so sacrifices need to be made. Work life and family balance is a difficult task, but as long as you have determination, and set your goals high, you will make it through.
Comix: Man, This is a great question. I will first say, i have failed at this many times. And still don’t have the exact answer. Sacrifice is happening, disappointing others is happening, I have had to break up and move on, and end friendships. None of that is fun, or glorious. I would say the first element I have needed is forgiveness. I had to forgive myself for messing up my work life balance. Then I had to stop feeling bad when i made mistakes with this. I have had to prioritize who and what is important, and that is extremely helpful. Communication is key in all of this. You have to let those who are important know when you have to honker down and spend more than normal time at work. And have a good reason when you need to work longer than expected, otherwise, don’t shortchange those who are in your corner for no reason.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Comix: I do a thing with my art that I call relevant media. In everything I do I have something to say. With Kings 4 Queens What we are trying to say is “women we appreciate you and value you. The show is made for the benefit of women, period. We wanted to say things good or bad that overall tell women that they are important and not endorse this throwaway culture, especially for black women, who get it the worst. I still don’t think we are where we want to be, but we are much closer than ever before and very excited for what’s next. Is anything easy? Not if it’s worthwhile. Any challenge is defeated by persistence and determination. Add focus, and good strategy and you can defeat them quicker. The never give up lesson is learned by experience, and through the pain of failure. I am not working towards telling the world anything they want to know about me in particular. I could say yea I want to remembered as…. whatever. They need to know God and need to know i serve Him as best as I can, and in the process making the world a better place. That is why I am here.
JS: Well, I put my hands in a lot of different endeavors. Kings 4 Queens, Music Production and hosting The Audio Trip Podcast. I try to just keep creating as much as I can. I lost a lot of family members this past year. I just keep doing because I have no other choice.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Comix: When people visit, I am all about fun and relaxation. Plus I would cater it to what they like, but for this question, I will tell you where I would take people based on my interests. For the week, we are visiting Midtown and the Beltline, Little 5 points, Lenox Mall, because why not? We would travel through some of the rich neighborhoods to look at the houses. We would visit the Battery to eat, well there are so many places to eat in this city, we would be creative based on what we wanted for the day. Really JS is the city connoisseur when it comes to this stuff.
JS: What Comix said and also add the Clairmont Lounge and also eat at Pappadeux.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
JS: First I would give A shoutout to Comix, Choco, also MC Paul Brman who gave me the creativity, well the creative desire. I want to give a shout out to my kids, Jamil, Bryce, and Ella, love them so so much. Definitely our audience and all the people who watch and write in to the show!
Comix: I know I am going to forget someone, But first I want to thank God, He has changed my life for the better. I want to thank my Parents, Mom I love you! and my Dad Rest in Peace. I want to thank my Kids, Kenyon and Damaria, thank you for your honesty and patience. Keith Johnson, Felicia Solomon, Charlene Byron, Tiffany Byrd, Stephen Blackmon, The Forkshop Family and Eaglesnest Church for your support and believing in me. All of our fans and friends and people who watch the show. It’s not possible without any of yall!
