We had the good fortune of connecting with Kimberly West and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kimberly, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I am from The Magic City of Birmingham, Alabama. Some would say, I came into this world loving art, design, and fashion. As a young child, I would spend my spare time sketching designs and pretending to manage a business, which sparked my interest in the field of entrepreneurship.

Early on, my parents encouraged self-expression by allowing me to participate heavily in the fine arts. This included poetry, music, and drama. Over time, my love for the arts led me to a career in storytelling and communications!

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
The Kimberly West Agency is a boutique public relations firm, servicing small businesses, public figures, and start-ups. The key ingredient, or secret sauce, that sets my firm apart is the ability to infuse style and flair into most campaigns. I help my clients think outside the box and it’s not unusual for them to be seen wearing bold suits, having the most clever social media campaigns, and with my help, telling their unique stories in a way that connects with their customers!

During my college years, I worked in the retail industry, and after graduating from Alabama A&M University (an HBCU), I landed a professional job as a statewide coordinator for a first-of-its-kind program that assisted military kids deal with parents who were deployed in the Middle East. Promoting this groundbreaking program and traveling around the country to tell its story helped me sharpen my skills in helping my clients communicate their value proposition. The turning point in my career happened when I became a contributing writer for a digital platform and launched a style blog. From that point, I was asked to host television segments, interview celebrities, and attend red carpet events as a media outlet.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Many people are not aware that Birmingham has amazing restaurants that are locally owned and food is grown within the state. The southern cuisine in our area is traditional but infused with a lot of cultures. We would start at Perrys Steakhouse & Grille and dine outside on the patio. From there, we would drive over to The Summit for a leisure afternoon of shopping, and end the day with pedicures at Woodhouse Spa. Of course, any girls’ weekend isn’t complete without, Sunday brunch at one of the many wonderful brunch spots in the area!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
First, I would like to dedicate this Shoutout interview to my mother, who always encouraged me to be a visionary. As a child, there was no limit to the number of arts and crafts in our home. Her greatest motto is to think outside of the box!

Secondly, I couldn’t leave this interview without recognizing my dad as well. His perspective on business has truly impacted me as a woman of color. My dad encouraged me to pursue my dreams and inspired me to be solution-oriented.

This question couldn’t be answered without giving a special Shoutout to my husband for supporting me during the launch of my business.
