We had the good fortune of connecting with Kimberly Speights and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kimberly, what do you want people to remember about you?
Your past is a place of reference, not a place of residence! I want people to remember I never allowed the dysfunction of my past to dictate my future! I learned from my past, grew from my past, and allowed God to use it for His glory! It was the referencing and learning from my past that lead me to purpose! When you surrender the seat of authority of your life to Christ, He’ll take the dirt of your past and use it to cultivate your blossoming and blessed future!

What should our readers know about your business?
Empowered To Overcome Inc., is unique in it’s approach to meeting the needs of girls and women that reside in vulnerable populations. Our mentoring curriculums provide a blend of traditional, social-emotional learning (SEL), evidence based, and Biblical teachings. Our mission is to extend the love of God to those who are ready to overcome addictions that are often not talked about nor acknowledged, such as sex addictions, soul ties, cycles of dysfunctional choices, and toxic habits, by providing not only hands on services, but also emotional support. We seek to empower them by going where they are and helping them reach a new level of stability in themselves and in Christ. We aspire to model Christ’s compassion through community service, words of encouragement, emotional, and financial support; as well as, equipping them to not only receive the promises and blessings of God; but to operate in it. We seek to help each person holistically, realizing that spiritual needs and physical needs are vitally interrelated.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love to travel, which is funny, because I’m truly an introvert! A must place to visit in Birmingham, AL, is the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute! In order to fully embrace who we are, we must learn our history!
Birmingham offers a vast array of delicious restaurants, but to be honest, I LOVE to cook! But if we had to go out I would say C&J Crab Shack, located in Gadsden, AL, Black owned, and they have the absolute best seafood! Plus the atmosphere is quaint and cozy! I also love authentic Italian food so, Gianmarco’s would definitely be on the list! Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I am truly blessed, grateful, and thankful for Telayo Standfield! She is the epitome of wisdom, grace, love and encouragement! She has prayed, encouraged, corrected, and loved me through some difficult and great times! She not just my spiritual mentor, she’s also my First Lady!

My career mentor “THE” Sunny Slaughter has been instrumental in providing me direction and teaching me boundaries with all that I manage. Her mind is literally full of strategies for not just success but also for sustainability!

A big “THANK YOU” to my Uncle Sonny, who has transitioned from this life. He literally saved my life! I’m grateful He saw in me the woman God created me to be and pulled it out of me!
