We had the good fortune of connecting with Kimani McCullough and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kimani, why did you pursue a creative career?
I didn’t choose being a creative, it chose me.
I already had been doing photography and video productions since my early years of college, it was something I loved to do more than anything else, and then I started making money doing it.
After graduating I tried working different types of jobs like industrial warehouse jobs and desk jobs doing sales, and I was still being driven towards doing something more creative and artistic. All my thoughts while at work were consumed with creative concepts I wanted to execute from photo shoots to music videos to films.
Working those other jobs was weighing on my mental health because I was not content on what I was doing at the time and I was still struggling financially so I decided if I am going to be poor I might as well be poor doing what I enjoy and working for myself
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am always looking for new ways to express myself artistically. Most of the work I create depends on the mood I’m in or my mental being. So my style is forever changing and adapting. I can go from wanting to just shoot fashion projects to wanting to do more theatrical and lifestyle shoots that involve set building and other creative designs.
I am currently transitioning to a storytelling direction with my work where I create concepts where I can tell a story with pictures as well as shooting a short film to go along with the photo set.
Getting to this point was not easy, it takes a lot of trial and error and just getting over that fear of failure. You cant get better without failure and nothing will ever be perfect. That’s just something I had to constantly remind myself every time I begin to overthink and impulsively decide I should give up. That’s something I am most proud of, being able to keep going no matter how many times I get discouraged
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would most likely show them the beltline, because there is always something interesting and fun to do. You could ride scooters, visit ponce city market and the sky park rooftop, piedmont park and there are plenty of bars and restaurants you can choose from. There might also even be a festival going on
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Shout out to the Class of 15 at Jackson State University, those were my first clients and people I was able to build my skills with a camera with and they also helped motivate me and build my confidence knowing that I could one day do this full time
